So the 718S outperforms the base 991Cab and is within 1/10th of the 991S Cab

I like the new turbo 4 boxster s ...I think the ability to tune these turbo engines will prove out to be a godsend to Porsche owners.
I think the boxster is more of a sports car and the iconic 911 s has it's own virtues that transcend logical comparisons...
The 911 is more mature, it's larger, it's more practical to a degree and it has pedigree much in the same way Ferrari does,...
I believe now that the 718 product is turbocharged four power plants the
Brand can improve performance.
The engine being a four cylinder allows Porsche to differentiate the 718 to the six cylinder in the 911...
Actual performance notwithstanding,
This is a good thing for 718 owners.

I've owned a 14 Cayman S and now own a 16 Carrera GTS. IMO 911 is a better car, feels better, has better ultimate grip. I've taken both cars to the north GA mountains, I prefer the 911.
There are a few boxer/Cayman owners who truly love their cars, others seems to be justifying their decision.
GT4 is another story, just got an allocation. Can't wait to compare it to my 911 GTS.

I own both and I agree the 911 is the better car from a performance and comfort perspective. If I wanted to set the fastest time down my favorite twisty road or ride in the most comfort, I'd take the 911. But I find the 981 more fun to drive most of the time. Love them both, but the 981 gets more miles.

that's funny to see this discussion at Boxster/Cayman forum.
I wonder what discussions are now at the 911 forums - "OMG, that freaking Boxster is almost as fast as our 911!!! What do we do now????"

I must be the one of those few. I've owned 911s and prefer the mid engine Boxster. I used to think the 987 Boxster was not as pretty a car as the 997 but that all changed with the 981/991 series. While the 991 may retain the iconic 911 look the 981 is more exotic and better looking in convertible guise afaic and I've gotten way more approvals from it than any 911 I've driven.
I don't care what the numbers say the 991S Cab felt less precise, looser with a somewhat disconcerting rear weight transfer on hard breaking in corners that my 981S did not exiit at all. Rather he 981S felt far more buttoned down nimble and predictable.
The only 911 that I'd give up the 981 series for is the GT3 which might be the best car I've ever driven. Can't speak on the GT4 as I have never driven one but imagine is stellar However as I'm a diehard open top guy so my next Porsche is a Spyer.
As far as justification is concerned, you've got it backwards my friend. the 991 an 981S share the same engine same PDK transmission, brakes, the 981S is subjectively better looking, with an interior of equal quality and has it's engine in the right place. For $35K more you get a tiny back seat more weight and an engine sitting atop the rear axel. There's a reason Porsche purposefully detuned the 981 engines. So 991 owners can justify that 35K at least got them one or two tenths of a second to go along with those rear seats. I need no such justification for my choice

Burning Brakes
I owned a lowly 99 Boxster TIPTRONIC and LOVED IT. Mid-engine is hard to beat even with low hp and an automatic. My financial success has grown a bit over the years. Now I have a 2013 991.1C2S 7MT (loaded up - 18 ways, full leather, PP+, Bermester, SC, etc.) and never want to part with it. My GT4 will be delivered in April - a stripper with LWBs and just a few bits. So, I love these cars, price points are different, performance varies, and levels of options and amenities - LOVE THEM ALL. What they have in common for me is lots of smiles in each. I do not give a damn about 0-60, quarter mile, top speed or other ridiculous measuring sticks. My little GTI is too much car for the roads. Since I never track cars, I just want the back road, blue sky, experience that P cars give me.

On to the 911.2 GT3 next.

If the 991.2 GT3 remains NA (highly likely) and comes with an MT It may be the last great 911 of the era. However, I'd still hang onto that GTS especially if it's an MT. Last of the Carreras with the big NA 6. I looked hard at a GTS MT Cab before deciding on the Spyder.

Comparison is the thief of joy and humans can't wait to foil their joy as soon as they find it. Those who appreciate and love their Porsche(s) are those who can think for themselves, exclude other's biases and are truly wise humans, all the rest are just looking over their shoulder and wondering how to act.
