2016 Spyder lost the media
I have seen the media paying attention to the new GT350, the new Miata and lots of other new sports cars but they seem to have forgotten the new spyder...
lost to obscurity.

The Spyder may be the last special edition convertible Porsche will make with an NA engine. Looks wise, I think the 981 Spyder is the best looking current car Porsche has made (of course with the exception of the beautiful 918).

I think this Spyder will be a great buy and hold. I really wanted one but just couldn't get beyond the top for my needs. I wanted another Boxster but I actually drive them and, since I take emergency call, can't be stuck with the top down v. a GTS with a smartTOP installed.
If I could afford a third Porsche, this is the model I would buy and drive/hold. It's been buried by the GT4 and I can't believe they seem to be showing up unsold at dealers. A Boxster with a 991 engine(ish) = win.

Porsche is more focused on the GT4... It's a new market for them (although we enthusiast knew it existed before Porsche did). The 981 Spyder is no different than the 987.2. Interest didn't gain until after the fact people truly realized what was in front of them. Production is extremely limited (500-600 for USA and Canada combined, where the GT4 is over double that!). I do think this will be the last Spyder we will see though. The Dieselgate situation for Volkswagen is not good for any low volume model under their Umbrella. Money is going to be extremely tight and they are going to pinch everywhere they can.

and where's the Spyder tie in merchandising . . . .
Maybe it's gonna be appearing in 2016, but you can't help but notice the lack of Porsche branded apparel and merchandise that's targeted toward the new GT4 and Spyder owners? For sure they'll eventually cobble something together for the GT4 brigade but it's far from certain we Spyder owners will get anything other than perhaps re-hashed 918 Spyder stuff. Hard to understand why they continue to overlook this market.

Porsche marketing sent me this by UPS yesterday. Nice box & marketing materials for the Spyder. I own a 2014 981 S I ordered new with X73. I must fit their demos.

The number of qualifiers in that sentence is telling ... For anyone except Porsche fanboys, the Spyder is a parts bin variant, not a new car. And Porsche, by sandwiching the Spyder debut between the GT4 and new 911 debuts, guaranteed that the Spyder would stay out of the media spotlight.
I don't really follow your logic, Starting with the first 356 Speedster to The 73 RS to the 911 Carrera Speedster to the 964 RS America to the 997 Speedster. All these cars are not new cars but parts bin derivatives so what's your point.
