Thanks for the post. Interesting read that confirms my "seat of the pants". My car is an 09 s, but my suspension and engine are developed beyond the R. I've been with GTS cars on track, and they are perhaps just as fast, but the feel?

Interesting read, thanks for uploading. The author makes some interesting points that get you thinking about what (if at all?) Porsche product road map was/is for these cars. I can't help think that the Cayman has been a little unloved by Porsche and as such under developed as a model line.
Now they seem to have settled it into the family model line up (standard/S/GTS) but then they ignore the R ... giving us a GT4 instead (well we did ask), but it's not as if they have given up on the concept of a light/back to basics car because look out here comes the 991R ! I guess they judge there's not enough room for to many models in the Cayman range but with the success of the GT4 maybe they'll have a rethink ? Or possibly it's just there's more money to be made selling 4X4's and 911's so they don't put the factory capacity into the Cayman ? I wasn't close to the market when the 987R came out but they certainly seems to be popular now, you'd think a 981R would find a market and that the success of the GT4 would reinforce that but as I say maybe it's just capacity and P+L, pity

Lucky for me,
I recently purchased a Cayman GTS, sold a 04 GT3 to finance the project. You may think, whaaaaat? He crazy? Maybe...but I wanted the PDK, Nanny driving experience. It was time for the GT3 to go, it had really become too valuable to use as a daily driver. I was worried that a distracted driver would hit me, or??? I like to run an occasional DE...the GT3 was awesome, but I just didn't want to risk any incidents. With the Cayman GTS, I don't feel so paranoid, and it is really easy to drive. I have done a couple of DE sessions in the car and would have done more but got rained out. The first session further confirmed that this was the car for me in the here and now. Acceleration was more than acceptable, brakes worked well on street pads and street tires. The sound and feel of the car in the Sports + mode has to be experienced.
No regrets...I have owned a GT3, and now off to the Cayman GTS. I have two pals locally that have them too....that makes it more fun.

I say it all the time...Porsche never improved upon the R until the GT4. It's too bad. Porsche could have easily made the 981 GTS a better performer. But Porsche always holds back since they know what's coming next and they have to give you more performance at small increments.
If Porsche is smart, and they usually aren't, they'd make a 2022 Cayman R with the 4.0 and make it lighter than any other variant and if they gave it shorter gearing it would be the best of the platform, to include the new GT4.

I have no frame of reference on mid-engine Porsche cars, this is my first, had five other 911 cars in earlier years: 73, 74, 80, 993, 2004 GT3 and now the GTS. Of all of these cars, the GTS is the most fun to drive....agreed, it may just be my perception.....that piped-in sound....regardless, it's my favorite Porsche car. Only had about 10 laps at the track so far....awesome.
GT4, great car, but too much car, and too much money for me.

PDK for the 981 is definitely an improvement over the 987’s slower shifting PDK. As the article says, and they’re correct, the 981 is nicer but less connected of a driving experience over the R, but keep in mind the R is a big improvement over the S (but the black edition is closer). If you can find a nice R, and you’re more about driving than being surrounded by bells and whistles, the R is the car to buy over any 981 3.4. Personally I prefer the 987’s interior over the 981 as well. You can see where Porsche cut some corners in the 981. Since the 987 and 997 shared some parts there is no corner cutting.

R vs GTS
L have a Cayman R. Purchased a Cayman GT4 with the intention of selling the Cayman R. Decided I liked the Cayman R better and sold the Gt4

In terms of sound, the R is both louder and more quiet. It has less engine bay insulation, and the door panels are thinner, so you get much more mechanical noise in the cabin. It's a great noise, to me. The GTS depends more on exhaust noise to get you involved, as the cabin seems very well insulated.
My R doesn't have the PSE, which the GTS does have, so the exhaust itself is quieter. I think it's a great sound, and it's a difference between the S and the R in that the exhaust flange itself is larger on the R. The sound is very proportional to RPMs, so as you get on top it makes a fair amount of noise, but not obnoxiously.
The GTS has the pops and gurgles though. They're fake but they do sound good. You can't go wrong with a PSE.
So it's a personal choice.
Hope that answers your question.
