Hey guys, this may be a dumb question but does a 981 Cayman S with Sport Package / Sport Crono and PASM have the Sport Exhaust by default without the PSE button? I have the Sport Pkg/Sport Crono and PASM but no PSE button. I'm wondering if my car has the Sport Exhaust (PSE) included and if the factory simply doesn't install the Sport Exhaust button on the center stack if it's automatically engaged by pressing the Sport or Sport Plus buttons. I have the brushed metal/matte metallic looking exhaust tips.

Nope, you don't have PSE installed. To verify that take a look at the exhaust configuration under your car!

It's a great sounding muffler, perhaps a bit too quiet, but no drone etc... I keep it on 95% of the time.
Correct. The sound definitely improves as the engine warms up.

What looks different between the standard Cayman S exhaust and the PSE?

There is a considerable difference in the appearance between the PSE exhaust and the standard exhaust. Most obvious are the 2 flapper valves. Also, the PSE muffler is smaller and some what irregular in shape to accommodate the location of the valves. I'm sure there are some drawings on here that will show you the differences in appearance.

Was cleaning up today and took a photo, tried to leave other car parts in frame to give you reference. Basically, looked at from below, PSE looks like it's "missing" a section, where the flapper valve is...

I'm just about to do this install on my Boxster 981. I can tell you for a fact that if your car was not ordered with PSE from the factory it is not pre-wired in any way. I have a 2015 PDK Sport Chrono car and nothing for the PSE was in place. You have to get the Tequipment kit from your dealer, or someone whom has purchased the kit and did not get around to the install. Depending on how tech savvy you are it can be daunting. In my Boxster I have to put the top in service mode, remove the driver seat, pull both engine access covers, move the driver rear trim behind the door that covers the seat belt mount, and pull the rear trunk liner just to begin the job of getting to installing the parts in the kit. The kit also comes with a new console button pack that they will need your vin to make sure you get the correct one. Which you also have to assemble yourself. Once the old mufflers are removed, all the wiring and engine pluming is done then you can go about installing the mufflers and button everything up. Then its a trip to your local dealer to have them code everything so that the exhaust works as intended.
I got extremely lucky and found a forum member that had purchased the kit but only installed the mufflers as they default to loud mode if nothing is connected. I got the entire kit so that I can install it like factory. My first 981 had PSE. My 2nd did not. I have to say it is well worth the money. Even my friends who aren't really car people commented that the car without the PSE did not sound as nice as my previous car.

You can alternatively use an aftermarket valve controller setup, like the Soul or Fabspeed options, which use remote controls. I did just that on a factory PSE, which made the install much easier. You can also program the homelink buttons to be loud and quiet, so you don't need to keep the remote in the car. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to route the vac line so it doesn't get too hot - I ended up removing the engine cover so I could keep the line high above the headers and other really hot bits. So far, so good.

Indeed you can use our valve controller kit to control PSE. The difference is whereas the PSE system will open up higher RPM's with valves closed, our valve controller will keep the valves closed. While it's not ideal for performance, it has helped some of our customers meet sound restrictions at track events. You can also program the homelink buttons to work with the controller, that process takes just a few minutes. Installation involves running wires for switched 12v power, a ground, and vacuum lines.

So it is a nice bit of $$ and easier/cheaper option done prior to ordering the car. Still worthwhile if you don't mind the expense.
Mind if I ask you how much it cost you to have the PSE installed by the dealer?

Mine cost approx $700 plus tax for the installation labor at a Porsche dealer.

Thank you! Under $3,000 for the parts and labor combined is not that bad.

Thanks guys, I just ordered the PSE from Suncoast for $2190 after watching some before and after videos. I'm sold on the crackle. Local Porsche dealer quoted $1540 for the installation. Seems steep but this is the SF bay area so it may be the cost of living bump. Curious what you all think about that price. I want it done right and on record as being done by Porsche.

Wow. It seems high. I'm going to my local Porsche dealer on this Saturday for a PCA gathering. I will get a price quote then and post. Could you post a link to the before and after videos you referred to?
