Default Drove a 981 Cayman PDK today...

What a blast! Stopped in at the dealership today to price out some 981 Boxsters and drove a lightly used 'Arrest-me-Red' 981 Cayman. I think it's a Launch car. I had it for a good 30 mins and took it on a good rip up and around some hills and down and around through Stanley Park. That is a GREAT car and IMO enough power to really DRIVE the car, and that's me coming right out of my 08 TT. I even had fun with the PDK but not sure it's worth the extra $3660. But regardless, if the deal was right, I'd take it. Love this car. Now, Boxster or Cayman?...

If you're not going to track it, then Boxster, of course.

Why not track a Boxster?

Broomstick test

Not that a Cayman would be much better in a high-speed rollover, either, without a cage.

I too visited my dealer yesterday and test drove both a Cayman S and a Boxster S - both with PDK. The Boxster was great. I am a convertible lover but the Cayman was pure magic. There was something about it that quickly made me forget about the Boxster. The engine sound right behind my head amplified by the interior - pure joy. I had an ear to ear grin for the entire 20 mile test drive - more so than I have while driving my current 991 7MT coupe.

To make a long story short, my dealer offered me an incredible deal on the Cayman. The 991 is going back 12 months early thanks to Porsche's current lease pull ahead option and the Cayman will soon be in my garage.

It's a scary thing isn't it when die-hard 911 purists are test driving Boxsters and Caymans? I agree - the Cayman is a magical car. I've not had a chance to take the Boxster for a good romp. I love the convertible top I must admit. Did you test the Base Cayman vs. the S? Just wondering as I drove just the base and had a blast. If you've followed some of my earlier comments you'll know that we have BRUTAL traffic laws here and I'm looking for a lower powered driver's car that with the revs screaming it doesn't go ridiculously fastl. Just yesterday there were two GTRs towed and confiscated for a week off the Sea-to-Sky hwy. Crazy ****.

Unless you are really tall, once you get into a 987 or 981 you don't have to worry about that

Didn't say one shouldn't track a Boxster. I tracked mine for seven years before I sold it. Just the risk is lower with a metal roof. That's in part why I switched to the 6GT3 (with a roll-bar). If no track is involved, I'd pick the Boxster over the Cayman. Beyond a certain level of track involvement the Cayman starts to win out. It's a subjective sliding scale.

If I lived in a cold climate I would get a Cayman, here in SoCal I would get a Boxster. I have a 993 and I like the 981 better than the 991. The new 911 is too big.

Zeus993 I sold my 996 turbo and my GT3 for my 993 and I love having a car that I can use the full potential of and without going to jail. I agree with you.

There is no way I can drive my 993 to it's full potential on US roads and not go to jail…but obviously it takes longer to get to jail speed territory compared to GT3s etc.

I would get the Boxster with Sport Suspension/19" wheels if you have another vehicle for the bad winter days.

This is what I've had in mind... Note: No audio system.

Nice configuration. I like the Sport Exhaust System FWIW.
