Cayman race car
I am thinking of building a Cayman race car. I am thinking I want a gen 2 S with PDK. Ideally a lightly damaged donor car would be the way to go. Any ideas or thought?
Thanks, Mike

First off, decide which organization (PCA, NASA, SCCA) you want to run with and then build a car that is competitive in the specific class. In PCA Caymans are very competitive in H, I and GTB1. Interseries cars are somewhat orphans in PCA. Buying an already built car with consistent podium finishes is the cheapest way to go.
I think PDK has a great future in racing but be prepared for PDK cars to be penalized with ballast to compensate their performance advantage over the manual cars.
What is your budget?

Napleton Interseries is dead. Racing program shutdown.
Contact Chris Smith Racing if interested in racing PDK cayman. They also have several 6spd cars for sale. Isringhausen is also building/selling some PDK Cayman race cars.
Olsen Motorsports, Deman Motorsports, Bodymotion, Musante, all have lots of experience in cayman race builds.

I run with NASA now and in the foreseeable future. My budget is in the 40-60k range...not enough to get a newer car i know. An 09 donor car will be in the 40k range then the build on top of that.

I can have a 2010 Boxster S pdk built pretty afforably (like 45k) from a donor BS that had some accident damage. I havent seen the car but have been assured it is straight. Should function the same as a Cayman with a cage tied into the suspension... Thoughts????

$45k for that is cheap. Is it a competitive build with all of the oiling and reliability stuff taken care of? I cannot see how a $40-$60k budget will get you anything but a Gen 1 6 speed Cayman.

i am going to go over in detail all of the items andmake a final decision tomorrow. Some of the items: gt3 toe links, straight pipes, gt3 nose, 1 set volk racing wheels, flat bottom race wheel, carbon cup OMP seat (takeout 2012 cup car) with brackets and sliders, window net, fire bottle, motons, springs, cup rear wing, carbon fiber roof. Some of what I might need: os giken lsd, headers/tune, ipd plentum, gt3 TB, icing solution if it is a problem.

Mike,
Some other items to check for:
Center net
AIM data system or equivalent
GT3 control arms and anti roll bar
GT3 brake cooling scoops
LSD
Communication system
Not sure about trans and power steering coolers and under drive pulleys requirements on PDK cars. Also not sure about oil/air separator requirements on Gen 2 cars.

May also want to look into Tarrett adjustable sway bars and toe links, monoballs, wevo engine mounts, GT3 master brake cylinder, possibly larger rotors ala brembo or Girodiscs if rules allow it (Caymans and Boxsters are known for their weak pedal feel). I think Gen 2s dont have many issues with oiling issues in either needing a deep sump or air-oil separator. I think the interseries cars ran with a third radiator and transmission cooler IIRC.
You can talk to Rebel Rock Racing for the insights. They have done many Cayman race car build (GT3 nose and all). Their facebook page has lots of photos of their recent Cayman race car builds.
Good luck. and take lots of pictures.

Gen 2 cars fixed all the stupid stuff on Gen 1. No oiling, PS cooling, Motorsport VOS, etc., mods are needed - at least in theory. After turning 2:13 and 2:14s at WGI for 40-45 min. straight this past weekend in a fairly stock car, I blew a small cloud of smoke when the car was restarted. It'd never done that before.
Mind you, this was after hot-pitting (no cool down), shutting off, then restarting in 5-6 minutes. Probably wouldn't have smoked if I'd done a cool down and had let the car sit for longer.
If racing, trans cooler is certainly a good idea. BGB does install PS coolers on their 987.2s, but it's more a product of bad experiences with 987.1s in the past than with actually having problems with Gen 2 PS pumps. IIRC, John Tecce said they installed PS coolers "just because/to be safe" since 987.1s always blew PS pumps in racing conditions.

So here is the deal. Donor car is a 2010 Boxster s pdk with 22k miles. Was in an accident that damaged rear bumper, left rear fender, and left front fender, bumper cover and small section of hood. Did have air bag deployment but only steering wheel. Builders says the car is straight.
Here is what is being done to the car:
GT3 cup from bumper/splitter; 997 fenders with flair; new hood; rear fender and bumper replaced; flat bottomed race wheel with QD; window net; 8.5/11" volk racing wheels; 6 pt belts; moton CS da; springs of my choice; alignment and setup; gt-3 toes links; solid rear bushings; gt3 upper hats front; kill switch; small bettery; Omp carbon seat from a 2012 cup with brackets and sliders; rear wing; cage; white interior
what it lacks is lsd; any additional trans cooling; additional wheels; anything to prevent abs icing; front or rear lca;
I'm sure i am missing some things. I need to make a decision pretty soon on this. thoughts, concerns, ideas???

You'll definitely want LCAs to get more negative camber. The amount you can achieve on stock suspension is pretty sad (around -0.9 on the front). Trans cooler in a race car would be recommended. Sway bars as others mentioned.
Frank had excellent suggestions above.

What about the hard top that looks like a Cayman?
