Default Broken shifter cable

It was a very disapointing Schattenbaum club race D.E. at NJMP this weekend.
I got one 20 min session and 2 1/2 laps before my shifter cable broke.
Has any body else had this problem?

John, I'm sorry to hear this.

First, I'd double check whether it was the plastic linkage at the end of shifter cable or the actual cable itself. The plastic linkages commonly pop out after much use. You can pop them back in but they'll eventually pop back out after a while. You can apply metal wires/contraptions to hold them in. Once they start popping out frequently, most people have them replaced.

If you broke the actual cable, it's much less common but does happen. There are at least a few cases on P-9. Your car should still be under warranty. DEPENDING on the dealer, it may or may not be covered under original warranty. Just a suggestion: if your dealer says no, try another dealer...

FWIW, Sharkwerks says that cable breakage is much more likely if one is "ham fisted" and tend to slam the shifter into gear. In that scenario, they'll all break eventually.

Finally, Numering Racing sells Cup-style shifter cables. May be worth a look.

Good luck, John. See you at NJMP in October.

Vetman,
The cable has broken at the transmission end.
It is covered under the warranty.
I would have thought that such an important system would have been more robust.
If the replacement also breaks, I will have to look into something better.
I do not think I am "ham fisted" but who knows. I do try to shift smoothly and quickly.
The short shifter is a little notchy, but not so much so that I am forcing it into gear.
Seeing how delicate it is, I will refine my technique.

Just to be clear, I was in no way implying that you were rough on the shifter. Just an FYI that's what Sharkwerks says can lead to shifter cable failure. The plastic fittings on the transmission side seem to pop out or break "all the time" (in internet speak).

Good to hear that your cable was covered.
