I am secretly hoping PGA does NOT produce another Spyder, leaving the 987.2 Spyder as the last of the analog steering, low weight to HP, very pure drivers car that it is. Just sayin...

Anyway he said that the 987 platform lent itself to a Spyder/R concept far better than the new one because of developments in electronic/safety aids that are more intertwined in things thus cannot be removed ( e.g. roof) This is what he was told from a head engineer. He did say that a baby Speedster maybe developed from the new Boxster and since the GT4 is taking the Cayman to Halo status that would be the halo for the Boxster.
It makes a lot of sense as reducing weight and frills was easier on the 987. The new car is superior in almost everyday but it's also bigger, more luxurious and equipped to start and would be difficult to get that light weight concept duplicated.
That's what I was thinking too. They already use aluminum throughput the car so changing body panels won't help unless they switch to carbon fiber. The roof might be made manual but dealers considered it wildly unpopular and I'm sure Porsche will listen to their dealers who are ultimately their customer. There's no doubt a sporty version will be made and it will no doubt be spectacular but I don't think Porsche will use the same approach as the Spyder.

I hope not because it would leave us with very few good options in the future if any. It seems companies are focused so heavily on performance they're forgetting about the experience. We'll all be driving around in GTR equivalents and that's not good.

My UK dealer confirmed that the Spyder will be announced in April and available in June. Saw it with my own eyes on his computer!

The Manual roof and fixed spoiler were deal killers for me.

I would like an adaptive spoiler and retractable hard top...and at least 400 hp.

What you describe sounds awesome but a hard top goes completely against what the Spyder is all about.

The funny thing is that the 911 has 20 different models available and the Boxster/Cayman only three so it's ripe for Porsche to create new versions. I wouldn't be surprised if they offered the same model for the 981 and future iterations within the next few years. Something for everyone.

Given that the Cayman GT4 is for real, I don't think it's unreasonable that a GT4/spyder version of the boxster is far behind. The real unknown is what kind of specs it will have.

Agree but a first post claiming to have SEEN the car on a dealer's computer screen is a big stretch. Panorama says it's going to a RS model, which implies to me standard top but hopefully with the Cayman GT4 specs (minus 10HP as usual)…will see.

I took 'seen on computer' as some sort of official text on the car, not an actual picture of the car.

I know I am dreaming. The closest thing Porsche has to a hardtop convertible is 911 Targa...and the little top is cloth. It has 400 hp and looks better than the 911 cab...but the Boxster looks so much better and spyder even better than that. I configured a Targa and it came to $150k. Would buy a Boxster for that but not a Targa. Ruf has an expensive solution. 3800s has 420 hp at $133k in 2013.

Correct - it was info from Porsche GB to the dealer! It also said that the GT4 will be announced in March and available in April.

It might be my first post, but I've been lurking for a while (and own a Spyder)!

Must be the super secret link to NORAD & Porsche HQ because I mentioned this when I picked up the rubber mats today to them and they looked at their computer and there is no such animal. They have confirmed as much as it's worth that there will be a GT4 and a Boxster model that will be an equivalent. But the Spyder was a sales disaster for them because of the top.
