Default Oil Top up

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this list and tomorrow I will pick up my very first Porsche. The car I'm getting is a 2006 Box/S 9000km. I understand that this car does not require service until 20 000mi (first oil change). What oil can I or should I use for what I expect will a frequent need for top up?

cheers

allain

Mobile 1 0W-40 (It will be in the manual). Available at WalMart. I have an '05 and it uses very little oil at 19k miles.

Congrats!!

Both my 05 987 Base and my 06 S were heavy oil consumers until about the 15K mile mark but the digital oil-level check is good about letting you know when you need oil. After that point, none. Keep an eye on the coolant level as well (accessed from the same port in the trunk). The coolant sensor does not seem to work so well on the 987 and in my experience, the cars have a penchant for going through coolant also in the first 15-20k.

Thanks guys,

So the car doesn't require special oil? Just regular stuff (not synthetic or "Porsche oil")? I ask this because of the very infrequent oil changes need.

thanks

As stated by another poster, it does need synthetic (Mobile 1 is a brandname for a synthetic).

When in doubt, check the sticker that should be on the deck lid of your rear trunk. It will give the exact specifications.

When in even more doubt, 1-800-PORSCHE will tell you exactly what oil to use.

Thanks guys. This list rocks!
Ok, comments raise the next question... what coolant do I top up with!

Someone else may chime in. I've only seen recommendations for Porsche brand. Be prepared to breakout the $$.

I just bought a gallon of Porsche coolant for $56 at the dealer. The Porsche secret formula is:

Ethylene glycol (107-21-1), Diethylene glycol (111-46-6), Sebacic acid (111-20-6), Sodium hydroxide (1310-73-2), Water (7732-18-5), Corrosion inhibitors, defoamer, silicates, and dyes.

Alternatives were put forth in this oft-cited thread:

Default Castrol

I just picked up my first Porsche B/S 2006/9600Km pretty loaded: nav, pref plus, multi steering, 19 sport design and much more.... Seal Grey/Metoprolol top with matching blue leather! Took me hours as I picked it up in Montreal in Friday rush hour. Stalled only once!

I had emailed the castrol help web site a few days ago and to my dismay I got this answer (cut and paste original):

Thank you for contacting Castrol

Castrol recommends using the recommended Porsche Oil which can be
obtained
at the dealership and if they cannot or do not carry it, Porsche
should be
able to make a recommendation for the appropriate alternate product.

Unless they have tested it, while we may suggest a product with similar
performance, only Porsche would be able to identify the equivalent
performance aspect.

Thank you for contacting Castrol, The Technology Leader!

Default Congratulations!

You chose wisely

Did they Service the car before you picked it up?

If they did not I would change the oil as soon as possible.

My 05 S just turned 6000 miles and is on its second change. I just can't get use to the extended oil change intervals that the factory specifies.

happy trails

Quiztime: My 06 Box/S is now 16 months in my garage. And it has 1500 miles. Work, and other cars have limited my freetime to enjoy my car. Now, is it time for an oil change? And what other services?

Thank You,

The book says every two years if you don't hit the mileage mark but I like an annual stamp
in the book so thats what I do.

Hey mountain_man_69,

I would suggest you just follow the manual. That way you stay within the terms of the warranty. There is a lot of info on this site and some excellent advice in "Excellence" magazine which will broaden your knowledge on the various oil requirements. It all leads back to the same place: follow the manual.
