Track Wheels 17" vs 18"
I'm buying track wheels for my 987. I'm leaning toward 17" because the tires are cheaper and I won't be so worried about burning them up. I have 18" S wheels on for the street. I'd be interested to hear from others that have added track wheels.

A good approach to making the decision might be to first decide which track tires and workable sizes you prefer to run and choose wheel sizes accordingly. I have a Cayman S with OEM 18" wheels (8 and 9" wide) and run Michelin Cups (235s and 265s). The Cups are very good track tires for this car, and can be driven on to and from events. They are a little slow to heat up, however, so they aren't very good autocross tires unless it's very warm. But I miss the 17" Kumho VictoRacers (225s and 255s) I used to run on my RSA. They performed similarly to the Cups on road and track, but worked better at autocross, and are cheaper.

I have an extra set of 18" OEM S wheels that I shod with Cups. To be honest, the Cup rears are a little lower profile at 265/35 vs the standard 265/40, and that gives the car a noticeably front-up stance that I don't particularly like. Also, Cups are not cheap.
I have no experience with 17". However, a quick check with TireRack shows no R compounds in standard sizes either.

I am in a similar boat with my 986. I have 18" wheels on the car. Bought a set of RA-1s for about $1100. Ouch. I was used to about 2/3s that cost on my 911 (with 16" rims). So. I am looking for a set of 17"s for my "cheap" track/ax tires and use the 18"s on the street.
IIRC, the offset for 987s is different than 986s, no? If so, I am not sure which 17" wheels might be best for you, Porsche or aftermarket for example. Be sure to add that into the cost. Also not sure what factory widths Porsche made available on their 987 17" rims. I am sure someone out here has the answer though
