Default Video: The Porsche Rain Dance - Putnam Park

More video from last weekend at the KYPCA Pumpkin Run at Putnam Park.

It had rained solidly for two straight days and the track was covered with puddles and rivers, but hey, it was a track day -- and great fun at that.

This is a few laps pieced together from the Instructor lapping day.

That brings back memories, my first experience at a DE event was in the rain on bad tires. But I learned more in that weekend about car control than anywhere else. And I had my windows down, ahhh, there's nothing like 60mph sideways in the rain with the windows down. Where else could someone claim that? Nowhere. I can't wait to go back. Different car this time too. Thanks for the video.

Yikes! It would have been sooner than that without PSC.

It's PSM, Chris. Poor Patrick in the 944 didn't have it.

Now that's an idea. I double dare you other track fanatics to do it with PSM off .

Ha! Looks like your Please Save Me light was getting a workout. Nice that you have a track where it is safe to drive in the wet and the spins can be harmless.

I'm jealous! I never had the opportunity to take out my 987 on the track (now I'm selling it unfortunately). Last time I did a track in the rain it was in a 97 Jetta GLX at Road America; what an exercise in patience and frustration. I learned a lot though.

One question Jrok, I noticed on several turns you track in rather early, not even using the outside of the track (esp after the straight), which seems to go against what I'm used to. Is that mostly a function of the combination of turns afterwards, the rain line at Putnam, or what works for the Boxster in the rain? I'm pretty used to late apexing in the rain just for extra room to track out.

What is your setup for video Jrok? Were you on streets or R compounds (the latter I am guessing)

Fun indeed to watch when PSM was activating. Rain driving really helps you learn to be smooth.

Thanks for sharing

I was trying to use the parts of the track that never get used normally. The dry-line is so polished that there is no wet traction there. That was the only way to get any grip for heavy braking with that much water on the track.

I have a homemade "L" bracket that I made that mounts to the roll bar -- with the center section of padding removed. The camera is a Sony DV, DCR-HC42. During the rain I was driving on my street PS2's, in the dry I use Hoosier R6's.
