420 HP Ruf "Spyder" - the Boxster that Porsche won't build.
I posted this on PPBB, but thought it might be appreciated here. My copy of Excellence magazine arrived today. The cover story is a 3.8L Ruf “Spyder.” This is the car based upon the 987 platform, jointly designed with the Stola guy.
The Ruf has stripes over the rear fenders in the spirit of the 550 Spyders.
I posted earlier on Rennlist that Ruf was rumored to be preparing a 450 HP Cayman with a tuned GT3 engine on board. I suppose it’s more likely they’ll use this 420 HP M97 power plant. But Ruf makes clear they'll put whatever Porsche engine the purchaser wants in the car (within reason) from the 3.2L Boxster S to a supercharged 997S powerplant. Excellence drove the 355HP version, but the 420 is coming.
The article seems to conclude what you’d expect. The car is brutally fast and nimble. A high degree of customization is available. Interior quality (thanks partially to 987 upgrades) matches performance. It's got some quirks, like no roof. It's a pure roadster, in that they've removed the convertible apparatus.
Price is not yet determined. Stola mentions that the billet gas caps cost some 1600 Euros apiece!, so don’t expect this car to be “entry level” in any respect.
It's a testament to the potential of the mid-engined platform that Ruf is choosing to develop such cars. Prior to the Boxster, every Ruf had been based upon the rear-engined 911.

I'm a little surprised they decided to put a supercharged M97 engine in this car, instead of a tuned GT3 motor.
The "R Spyder" is going to be a pretty rare (and expensive) car. Only 49 will be made.
The Ruf Cayman will be a giant killer. Alas, it will probably be just as rare and even more expensive!

Alas, no price is mentioned. Here's what the article says on the subject:
High component costs mean neither Stola nor Alois Ruf have committed to a final price on the car. Says Stola: "That is still being decided." But the R Spyder won't be cmpromised to cut costs. Quality of design and details are what this car is all about.

[QUOTE=kcrpca.org]Couple of comments:
1) Waldo, if you want to see more Atlas I've got pics at http://www.kcrpca.org/boxster.asp as well as a video in another thread.
Thanks so much for the link, but I had already found your website and downloaded your photos. They are great pictures of an awesome looking car.
