How long would it take before the Porsche "CAYMAN" is known as the car for "GAY MAN"?
Not my ideal name choice. Wish that Porsche's marketing department would take more care with things like this.

this is actually going to be the nameplate on the car, its just not some internal name? are they nuts?

PAG will not reconsider. As I said, they already did some brainwashing to their dealers (I saw some of their internal docs), and insisted on the fact that the Cayman is NOT to be called Boxster Coupé. They really want to sell it as a distinct model-line. Needless to say, some dealers are wondering about how to explain this to their customers... As my dealer told me: how will they call the Cayman Cabrio...

It seems PAG definitely wants to make the car separate and distinct from the Boxster. Maybe even the internal designation will be different. The only reason I can fathom is that they will actual allow this car to be a mid-engined equivalent if not superior to the beloved 911. Think of it. The Boxster has always been, from it's inception, an entry level Porsche meant to occupy a niche BELOW the 911. Lower HP even though it can have the same engine, lower price, options that would otherwise be standard on a 911. To market a car tha is equivalent or even superior to the 911, it HAS TO have a different name. The design certainly has the potential. Unfortunately, it also HAS TO have an equivalent if not superior price tag.
The only rally bad thing is the name they chose. I agree. Cayman sucks.

I wouldn't be too sure, Paul. True, Porsche has worked miracles with a rear engine design. But the flagship, the GT, is a mid-engine design. It's not such a stretch the the Cayman (boy, that name really sucks) of the future will be a redesign based on the Boxster platform that will outperform a future 911 .

It's not a stretch at all, and they could do it with EASE, but I REALLY don't think it will happen. Trust me on this one (or PM me).
By the way, I plan to get this new car in its second year of manufacture, or shortly after a club sport version is introduced.

it seems obvious that Porsche's future is tied to a mid-engine 6 cylinder and the return of the front engine V8 GT. The mid engine car, call it whatever you want, has a whole new life ahead of it with unlimited potential for performance....it will replace the 911, allowing Porsche to concentrate on two markets....mid engine performance and front engine grand touring/luxury.

There's been talk (unconfirmed, of course) that PAG will take the Boxster coupe, errrr Cayman, racing.
Also that it will be offered in a Club Sport "driver-focused" edition, probably with the 3.4L on board.
I'd be very surprised if PAG allows the "Cayman" to upstage the 911. The 911 is the cash cow, delivering by far the largest profit-per-car.

with a fixed roof, given that it can only improve the chassis dynamics and handing that current auto magazine reviews seem so impressed with, this car has alot of potential it would seem.

Agree the name sucks. Also, why designate it already as an "S" line? They've said there won't be any lower price point vehicle than the Boxster, so what will a regular Cayman be.
Man, the more I say that name the more ridiculous it sounds.
