Can anyone point me to the price list for the 987, S? My dealer told me today he can place an order for me anytime for one of his Jan. allocations. However, he was too busy with a damned Cayenne sale to help me. The other sales people were are at sales training on the '05 cars.

Anyone have the torque info? Dropping a half-second with 0-60 suggests the torque increase is more significant than hp increase. Would like to see the curves.

I'd bet the ranch the S transmission is the same as the 997. 996 and 986 S transmissions were the same. Ditto with most parts from cab forward. The only differences I see from cab forward are the headlamps and the round interior air vents, the latter which I absolutely hate. I didn't drive the new 911 but the stick sure feels shorter and smoother in dry dock... it also received good reviews so this is another bonus to look forward to in addition to power.

997/987 differences look greater than 996/986 differences thanks to the headlamps and interior vents. This may satisfy the 911 owners who need this validation but let's not forget that parts sharing saves Porsche a lot of money so it is reasonable to expect once again that 997 and 987 will have much in common.

I guess we all know the delight to be expected with increase in power but I'm really looking forward to feeling the new handling with the added track width. However I'm concerned about intrusion from the new variable steering. I heard it's nothing like BMWs sucky active steering but who knows. Don't think it was necessary.

The new roll bars have a different shape. I preferred the older rounder version. All things considered, 987 certainly appears to have the genes we all love and indeed it looks like a better bargain than 986. I suppose this will translate into fantastic end-of-year prices on 04s.

I think if you'll check, you'll see that Porsche posts the 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) as 5.7, NOT 0 - 60 in 5.7. I've seen many different 0 - 60 times for the Boxster S but one of the most reputable is from Motor Trend (0 - 60 5.3 sec) so the 0 - 60 in 5.2, although great, is not as significant as you first suggested.

Yep, infact the 0-60 rating of the Boxster S from Porsche (according to my owner's manual) is 5.4s.

I know that the 997's gearbox has steel synchros (vs. the 996's brass ones). So if the 987 ans 997 share the same tranny I would assume steel synchros in the 987.

This may be a leap, but if the 987 S and 986 S both have the same 3.2, does that mean one could bolt a 987 S tranny to a 986 S? Or at least be able to rebuild a 986 S tranny with 987 S parts?

It may be to soon to tell. But I worry about my synchros as I have a number of them fail with extended track use. It would be really sweet if I could get steel synchros installed.

It does sound logical that the 997 and 987 6 speeds will be the same...oh boy!

In regards to the various acceleration figures... it has always seemed to me that Porsche factory figures were the most conservative and Car & Driver's were usually the best (6K rpm clutch drops?).

Boy, I'm still excited about this car!
