Default Everyday Driver Episode - 987 v 981 v 718 Generations

Interesting video comparing the first 3 generations. I found the closing comments a tad surprising.
987 R vs 981 GTS vs 718 GTS - all PDK

I cant help but notice the 987 lines shining here.
Good luck to your favorite generation!

Yeah I enjoyed that vid.
More and more, folks are coming around to appreciate the Cayman.

Was surprised to hear them say the 981 GTS felt like the biggest car of the bunch.

I need to test drive a GTS soon. My 981 base Cayman feels small, tight as <insert fav euphemism here> and extremely smooth and refined in every way.
They did mention how smooth the car rides.. everyone that has sit in my passenger seat has said the same thing, all on their own accord.

More cudos for the 987 Cayman R. Would love to drive one of those one day too.

This is another reason the 987.2’s are hard to find.

Nice video - thanks for posting.
The 987.2 S is the most exciting car I've ever driven. The noise, the ride, and the feedback is more than I expected, all I will ever need in a sports car.

987.2 and 991.1 in my garage. 987 is the one I take when the connubial needs bread or if I need to relieve stress.

I have a 987 Boxster S that I have owned for about 14 years. I also have a 718 CGTS that I have owned for about 2 1/2 years. I drive them back to back pretty frequently. I still don't know which car I prefer. Actually at this point it just gives me a headache comparing them. One of them needs to go in the next year since I have four 2-seater cars and my limit is three.

Neither of these cars is a great GT highway cruiser but what they lack in that department, they make up for in the backroad twisties.

Interesting video. I don't understand the "718 drives smaller" comments. Is that simply a result of the 10% faster steering rack, or something else at play (weight balance, shift, different tires, etc.)? I did notice the 718 was equipped with the lightest wheel option, while the 981 had one of the heavier wheel options.

That 987 steering feel and feedback is like nothing I have ever experienced. They’re not exaggerating when they say they can feel pebbles and changes in road surface feeding into your senses, telling you how much grip you have and what the car is doing at each corner. It inspires a huge amount of confidence but at the same time it doesn’t feel like the car is doing the work, instead it is a willing partner that responds as you would expect. Being less filtered you also get a feeling of speed that is sorely missed in the more modern sports cars.

Funny thing is - under most circumstances, I drive a bit slower in the Boxster than I do in my Cayenne turbo.. the Turbo does handle, but you're isolated from the tires talking to the pavement, and you really don't hear that conversation, so - faster seems fine, and it typically is. Particularly on straight roads. The isolation, the quiet and the ride quality really do mask the speed in the Turbo. The big difference is corners - the Cayenne (which is noted as being the best handling SUV made) does corners well, but the lean angles now make me a bit uncomfortable. There is no clue as to where the limit is.

The Boxster is simply wonderful in turns - it is communicating what the road is telling the tires right up to the steering wheel. Corners I'm considerably faster in the Boxster, and there are some that I go out of my way to play on. Many I do 2x recommended speed (yellow advisory signs) unless I know that around the corner is a blind driveway, or possibly bikes in the road, or the corner is prone to debris. And if it's the right day, and the right lack of traffic around, it will go into SportPlus and see how corners are at near redline.

I'd take the Turbo to go coast to coast to coast (I have 3x so far with the current one), but the entire time I'd be on the opposite coast I'd be wishing for the Boxster, to take advantage of the Canyon roads of California.

Good descriptions. This 987.2 is everything I dreamed of. It's my first Porsche... looks and feels like it might be the only one I'll need

Still haven't driven a 718 yet but agree with their 981 vs. 987 assessment in terms of refinement. I'm tempted to schedule a test drive with a 718 just to experience it, but might look on Turo instead.

I don't see the 718 design aging well.

Am I missing something they keep referring to the 718GTS as a turbo 4 when it is a flat 6 - 3.8L. Or am I mistaken? Hard to trust an assessment when they don't know what they are driving.

I am very happy with my 981BGTS with tune a great ride and not as raw as the 987's but that is what I have air-cooled cars for.

I have driven the 718S and IMO not worth my time. I quickly searched for a 981BGTS and was happy I did. The 718 turbo 4 is a faster car but had very little to offer over the 981 IMO and sounded like a VW bug more than a subi but not many remember what a beetle sounds like. I can't wait till we tune my sons 981 Cayman S. The custom tune my friend does gets the same power out of the S as the GTS and IMO is a far better drive than stock in every respect.

It's likely a 718GTS from 2020. 718GTS 4.0 is a 2021 model.

It would appear it is a 2018/2019 GTS as they were flat 4's the 2020 appears to get the 4.0L. I did not realize they weren't all flat 6's. I wonder if the GTS flat 4's have the same overheating issues we see on the S models?
