What's a good alternative to PASM in a 981CS?
 

I'm looking for a 981 Cayman S with PASM.
Turns out that's not easy to find.

I plan to drive it on the street and do about 3 DEs per season.

I've had PASM in my 997GT3 and 997S and liked it very much for the way I use the car.

What's X73 like on the street?

How about B16/PSS10?
Can those be comfortable on the street?

Bilsteins are not as good as Ohlins but both have tradeoffs. KW is halfway between the 2 with regards to longevity and performance.

I’ve owned both a PASM and X73 equipped 981. Prefer the X73. Prefer the X73. They are very different. PASM gives some flexibility, but X73 isn’t harsh at all (playful!) and just inspires confidence.

How is X73 compared to soft mode on PASM?

Ohlins > KW > Bilsteins
Hard > Soft
High Maintenance > Low Maintenance

I love my Ohlins but the springs would be a little stiff for many people.(400f and 460r) There are various spring rate options for each that certainly change the ride quality. Ride height also changes this; mine are set pretty low. When I say maintenance.... the Ohlins should last between 50K miles and 75K miles depending on conditions, use and settings before needing a rebuild. Blisteins should last 75K to 100K miles again - depending. KW in between. Historically KW hasn't been known for performance as much but recently a lot of endurance cars have been running them(a 10-15K$ variant and not the 2-3K$ variant but trickle down engineering is real).

The most comfortable setting on PASM is definitely more relaxed than X73. It really comes down to whether the X73 is acceptable for normal driving for you. Nothing beats an A/B comparison. I passed on an X73 spec because I was worried about it. In retrospect, that was a mistake. You can’t avoid bad roads / construction where I live and that was the concern. Living with it in those conditions has not been a problem at all.

I installed x73 into my previous 981 Base Cayman and it was the best thing ever. Fantastic on the streets to the point that...for street driving...I think it's slightly better than my stock GT4 suspension.

I've been looking at upgrading thew suspension of my 2016 base 981 Cayman.

My initial goal is to some how upgrade to adaptive suspension for speed and comfortable daily driving ride, then stiffer for track (4-5x a year).

I found this DSC Sport controller product that will mate with the PASM ready Bilstein.


I found Suncoast has the X73 Sport suspension kit for quite a bit less dollars than a total DSC controller + Bilstein setup. I've heard that the OEM sway bars are not as good as some other aftermarket solutions.


This thread is obviously in favor of the X73 setup, but I worry about the roughness of daily driving with X73 rattling the car apart.

Don't - the X73 is tame. I believe its also a fantastic all arounder. I wanted to be a but more extreme and lower so went with Ohlins. Ohlins are MUCH stiffer.

Then why did you not just do aftermarket swaybars with shock/coil of choice? Or was X73 already installed and Ohlins was your upgrade?

My Base 981 was riding way too soft for my taste and the TPMS system was indicating 33psi on all four wheels. The spec label in the door suggests 29psi front / 30psi rear.
So I hyper inflated the tyres. My compressor said I got 35psi front / 36psi rear but the TPMS system now indicates 38psi front / 39psi rear (+3psi diff). Not sure which is more accurate.

This has helped to stiffin up the ride significantly, so am happier with the way it feels.

Its understood the tread patch on the road is now smaller.. so have to be a bit more careful.
Next canyon run I'll be sure to deflate 'em a bit to increase the size of the tread patch.

Fairly new Pirelli PZero-Grip tyres that came on the car.. so could care less about 'em.
