Default Spyder Paint Question

I recently purchased a 2011 Spyder and one thing looked a little odd when it was delivered. Today I took the car to the dealer for a SMOG test and the service manger said it did not look right. Can other Spyder owners look at their Spyder and confirm if this is normal or is a sign of paint work repair? This is the section of the car between the top of the taillight and the trunk lid which is about 1 1/2” wide. It is the same on both sides. Nothing else looks odd. The carfax is clean and the PPI was either a scam or a very bad dealership.

It's normal... All of my 987.2 Spyder's had this same issue. Not sure if it's a Spyder specific issue or all 987 Boxsters.

If you look really close you’ll see that my bumper also has a similar defect, it was like that from the factory. I debated asking them to repair it but then I didn’t want to mess with a respray and just left it alone. I suspect that the bumper mold may have been off slightly in this area and was never cleaned up before installation.

Thanks n4v4nod! Someone sent me a pic of a black one and you could not tell. I assume on the white or other colors that body flex causes that to show.

i will sleep like a baby tonight!!!

I think you are right... it’s a bumper mold thing. Almost like they needed to sand the it smooth before painting. I think it’s where the mold meets and there was excess material that leaked... it was painted and the pressure from touching the rear fender causes this minor defect.

Wow, I just saw this thread and had to run out and check my 11. Don't recall seeing anything like this on my car. It still looks good on both sides with 37K miles.

Lucky! It is a factory defect and it was like that from the day I received it with 7 miles on the clock. It also hasn’t gotten worse

I don't see anything like that on my 2008 RS 60

I'll check my 2011 white spyder tonight but I don't think it has anything like that. I would have said it looks like someone remove bumper and gouged that edge up.

I wonder if Porsche switched bumper suppliers when they started manufacturing the cars in Stuttgart.

For those of you with 2011 Spyder’s. What are last 4 of VIN? I believe the last 3 or 4 are the production sequence? That may help pinpoint a production change?

mine is 5615.

thanks!!

Did we decide if this was a Spyder only issue based on Stuttgart assembly? I may add a data point to the FAQ if so.
