HI, I have a 2015 base Cayman PDK with Borla Exhaust, Fabspeed sport headers, and Cobb accessport (stage 2). It' still doesn't have enough power and planning to do a x-51 3.8L or 4.2L swap. I see a lot of shops on the East coast doing it, but don't see any in Southern California?
Has anyone done a x-51 swap in SoCal. If yes, which shop and the cost as well? Most important of all, is the car working well without problems?
I kept my factory headers and exhaust.... will reinstall factory headers before a SMOG test... takes an hour or 2 change or costs 200 to have it changed in LA.
Just curious as I had my Cayman R tested last month when I brought the car in from Arizona. The tech spent a good deal of time with a mirror on a stick looking at the underside of the car for any modifications.

The main issue with swapping a 2.7 to 3.8+ is the emissions rating, I believe the 2.7 is ULEV and the 3.4+ is LEV so when you swap the motor out and bring it in for inspection it won’t pass. It is possible to start with a 3.4 and upgrade to 3.8+

I have a 4L X51 swap in my GT4 from Deman (NY) - it is awesome, love it, but I don't have to deal with CA inspection... yet (been thinking about moving). Does CA do more than a visual? Externally everything still has a Porsche part number so short of looking up part numbers so how would an inspector know the difference?

Be happy you don't have a Boxster. They make you show them the emissions sticker that's on the engine cover if the car is from out of state. Yes, THAT engine cover.

ODB scan shouldn't be a problem, my car gets scanned annually, no problem. Visual on the engine cover though is crazy, what a huge pita. Assuming the sticker is on the cover and not the intake, most probably won't notice the difference between the oem x51 intake manifold and the stock one unless they are a Porsche fanatic...

PITA - yes. Pro tip - make a video in the comfort of your garage, start at the car's VIN then pan to the done the day before emissions certification (showing date) then pan to the back of the car and end on the engine cover's stickers. THEN be highly persuasive and convince them to accept the video rather than having you disassemble the car in front of them. Worked for me - but was far from a slam dunk that it would. They just do that once, when the car is brought in. After that you only need to do the regular OBD emissions test (and pay double because - Porsche!)
