Default 981 Spyder rear brake cooling

Hello,
I had an issue with my rear brake pads, they were burnt,
after a few track days.

So I thought improving the rear brake cooling.

My 981 Spyder has no rear cooling duct. I was suprised as I a friend told me his 981 GTS
has rear cooling duct.

In PET I found this part number
981 331 481 00 for the 981 GTS and
982 505 569 for the 718 models.

From the drawing it seems, both maybe fit to the 981 Spyder.

Does anyone knows, if the 718 brake duct is bigger than the part from the 981?

best regards
Guido

I looked it up and the Spyder thrust arm that the ducts fit on are the same part number from 981 to Spyder. So the 981 GTS ducts will fit. Just note there are different part numbers for left and right sides. The arm has to be removed from the lower control arm to fit the duct through the forks. 718 thrust arm has a different part number than 981, so I can't say the 718 ducts will fit, or know if they are bigger. 997 ducts are bigger but I don't know if they will fit.

Did your calipers turn color? Red usually turn brown-red if the caliper overheated. What type of pads? If the calipers stayed red and you are using factory pads, step up to a track pad may help in addition to the ducts.

Because I had my 981 Cayman S calipers laying around, I just upgraded my 981 Boxster base to larger rotors and the S calipers. It too, had no rear air ducts and I just added the 981 part number ducts that you mentioned.

On the Cayman, I went with 380/345mm Brembo GT brake kit. I still boiled my rear brakes and darkened the calipers slightly. I added a second duct, along with titanium shims and insulated rear brake lines to fix the issue. The second ducts are from the 997 GT3 and fit on the lower control arms (note two mounts - one for regular LCAs and another for Cup LCAs). This duct needs a 345 mm or larger rotor due to where the air output is. It will also require removal or modification of the backing plate.

Thank you Voyager for your feedback, I did not see if der caliper color has changed.

This is how my brake pads looked.
