Default Shift cable woes and a stroke of luck!

In my Gen-1 Spyder, after a great first of the season run up and around hill and dale in West Vancouver yesterday, I decided to stop by the local dealership. As I rounded the corner and geared down, literally 1/2 block from the front door, I suddenly found my gear lever flopping in the wind! Whoa! I had to ride the clutch a bit to drive it into the service bay. But what a stroke luck to break down so close. Crazy lucky.

Now to decide what to put in it for cables? GT3? Cup cables? Numerics? Stock?

It's already got a great shift feel with the PSSK.

Sorry to hear, but as you say it could not have happened at a better spot.

I am a believer this should be good willed by Porsche as long as they know they are inferior to aftermarket. Having said that I’m going Numeric WHEN this happens..

I know Nick - crazy lucky. Was laughing yesterday with some buddies about my life being so organized!

You bring up a good point. I know that 6-months ago my Gen-1 Spyder buddy in town here had his break as well. And he was STRANDED, had to call a flat-deck etc... Mine were "squeaking" at that time and in retro-spec should have replaced them then.

I was dumb-a## LUCKY that they didn't snap mid the wilds of the run I was on yesterday. What a scene that would have been - leading 80+ cars on a PCA drive. Yessh.

My suggestion? Get them done sooner than later. Don't wait.

The cables use ball joints and the cable ends are nylon cups. They can pop off or break. If not broken, have the cables lubed with Kluber Plus Gel 00004320593 at both ends to reduce the likely hood of repeat incident. It is also used for cooling system O rings.

Talk about lucky, Zeus was looking down on your Spyder when that happened!

Porsche recently updated the cables on the 987 so personally I would replace with these.

That's good to know V6. Perhaps that's all it will be - a simple fix, if I'm lucky again.

Totally lucky. So good. Thanks for the update on the cables. I'll find out today what the score is. The extra bit of the "tragedy" is that there's not a cloud in the sky and it's perfect Spyder driving conditions. Arghh!

Wow! Can we go to Vegas together? I'll drive since I already replaced my cables.

I cut mine open a bit after removal. Definitely a weak link of the car.

Wow. That'a ton of wear. Mine replace yesterday, car all buttoned up and driving like a champ. Great service from local Porsche dealership.

Such an amazing car for top down weather.

Great to hear. Did they mention anything about the differences between the cables they installed vs. your original ones?

Have they changed the cables only or the brackets as well?

I replaced my broken cables with the updated OEM on 2012 Boxster.

Yeah, that's lucky!

Mind me asking what they charged you?
