987.2 base model PPI question
Hey all,
I'm considering having a PPI done on a base model 2009 Cayman. I realize that the 2.9s don't suffer the same bore scoring as the 987.1, but would it be worthwhile doing as part of a PPI anyway?
Looking for advice.
Thanks!
David

You'll probably get a range of answers because there is no "right answer" to your question. Personally I don't think it is something you need to have checked and I literally this week just bought a 2.9L 987.2. You can chase down every potential problem that might exist, but you'll make your wallet lighter and yourself crazy obsessing over everything. I'd say look for the known issues (water pump leaking, tread on tires, brake pad life and rotor depth, smoothness of the transmission, and weird sounds or rough idles, etc.) Look at the maintenance records and schedule and see what's due and what has been done. Factor all of the above into your offer, strike a deal and enjoy.

I just this past week as well bought a 2009 2.9L Cayman 6 speed and my PPI didn't include bore scoping, leakdown, or compression testing. We did pull the dme report, codes, and then basically did the Porsche CPO checklist, which i think is available on here somewhere. Leakdown and compression were discussed but in the shops opinion the car pulled hard, didn't exhibit any potential symptoms (whatever those are, i just followed the shop recommendation) and so we didn't do them. I then drove the car 1767 miles back home and it ran like a top
good luck with your search and definitely get a PPI, even on a great running car you might have things like a torn CV boot, leaks, or other things that could mean big $$$ down the road.
edit: I forgot to say, it had service records from new which was very helpful.
