This is why it's a poor man's 911.... The whole world knows it's a nine eleven but obviously there is a lot of confusion with 987 , 981 etc :-)

TBH I've both heard and used both. I more frequently say nine eight one, but I don't think there's anything wrong with nine eighty one either.

Well, no, the equivalent would be how do you pronounce 991. For the record, I've always heard the last two digits pronounced together, as in nine eighty-one, or nine ninety-one. But maybe my brain just hears what it wants to.

If you want to make people's heads spin, tell them you have a 991 (or a 997, or a 996, or a 993, or whut-ever)! Even Porsche-people in the know, sometimes have a head spinner.:) Just don't do this at the block-party, you may not be invited back next year.
