Noisy shifting

I know it’s a weird title for a thread but it’s hard to describe. I bought this 2010 base Boxster in Oct. I had a little doubt about the clutch because it grabs when the pedal is a lot higher than my other Porsche. It doesn’t slip or shudder, it doesn’t shift hard and isn’t notchy, in fact it drives great. The only thing I noticed after I brought it home was when you shift you can hear the gears engaging, like a soft clacking sound. Is this a sign of anything wearing prematurely? Car has 36,000 miles on it. I called my Indy and he wants to drive it and see what’s going on, but with the snow and crazy work schedule, I haven’t had time. Any thoughts?

Have you checked to see if you're low on tranny fluid? Maybe a slow leak has finally caught up.

Also wonder if someone replaced the shifter and/or cables? My Numeric shifter makes a nice rifle bolt sound when shifting.

I have a base 2010 Cayman and when I bought the car 4 years ago the FIRST thing my Son said after I got back from a test drive was “wow you can really hear that car shifting from outside..” What I think you are hearing is perfectly normal. These are very “analog” cars THANK GOODNESS.

Not sure if normal or not as my car is somewhat new to me, but my 2007 is also pretty noisy, and about 2x nosier than my 991.

Ok thanks everyone! That’s a great description Pep!RRR. That’s exactly what it sounds like. I’ll check to see if the cables have been changed.

Are you hearing this when driving or when the car is shut off? I can’t hear mine over the exhaust when the car is on.

I got the impression you could hear the gears chattering while you were driving, but if it's just the sound of the gears engaging, especially at idle while sitting in a garage where it echoes, then that's definitely normal and sounds the same as my 981. I think most of us actually enjoy it.

I can also attest the sound at the shifter itself is more pronounced after the Numeric Racing cable install, but I enjoy that too.

I do not hear it while driving. I heard it when my wife was pulling out of the driveway and my co-worker mentioned it as I was pulling into the garage at work.

I can hear mine loud when I'm in traffic and put it into first. Not gear noise though its more like a rifle bolt as PEP said above. Personally I like the noise and the crisp gear engagement. If you shift when the car is off its very loud do that and see if its the same noise

Nothing new to add but I also just hear a rifle bolt sound when the car is off or putting it into first when stopped. Do you not hear it in the 7MT GTS? My fathers 718 S makes a similar sound to mine, bit quieter though
