Burning smell?

Burning smell?
I took my 2016 Boxster for my first real ride today after its delivery from across the country a couple of days ago. About 40 minutes with a couple of stops. Stop and go for a a little and 45 to 65 for the rest. From nearly the beginning, when stopped at a stop light, I smelled a smell like burning oil. When the drive was over, there was definitely a smell like burning oil and the area in the rear wheel wells was really hot. Nothing's on fire; no smoke. It recently had an oil change at the dealer. Should I be worried?

Did you check the oil level and oil temp? Anything abnormal there? Our cars often smell a bit, and the rear wheel wells can get pretty hot since the headers, cats and exhaust are all right there...but if you're concerned, just take it to the dealer.

Normal. As long as you're not dropping oil or see anything burning, it's fine. I've gotten those smells from all of my Porsches.

As others have indicated a "hot" smell can be expected depending on how you have been driving the car. A couple of laps on the track will make all four rotors as hot as a pizza oven and you can definitely smell and feel the heat as well as the exhaust and engine. IMHO a burning oil smell is different and needs to thoroughly investigated. Changing the oil filter can be messy so that could be the culprit. Check under the car where you park for oil drops. If the smell persists take it back to the dealer and have them put it on a lift and inspect around the filter area and clean it up. After saying all that I would not be worried.

My car always smells like burning/hot even on the street. Smells nice to me.

Oil, coolant and burnt wiring/rubber all have odors and causes that are different from the "mechanical heat" of a hot drive train and brakes. Given that the car is new to you and you're not completely familiar with it, a trip to a shop or dealership might be reassuring if nothing else.

It has been reported that there is a coating that is used to protect new cars when they are shipped from overseas and it takes a while for the burning smell to go away. My Cayman had it for quite some time.

TBH, my 98X's have all smelled after driving, even after 40k miles. No idea what causes it. It is more pronounced after track use (more brakes obviously), but dunno what it is.
Other cars, even sporty cars, don't seem to smell the same. It's Porsche's perfume I suppose.
