Default Engine wash or not

Just replaced air filter on 2009 Boxster with 33K. Top of the engine is obviously dusty. Can see darker grime further into the engine. I can wipe the top dust off but the other grime would need Simple Green or equal. Gunk would seem to be overkill not to mention the smell. Hesitant about spraying water into areas that aren't designed for it. I resisted the need to clean it the last filter change. Comments, recommendations or lessons learned?

My 07 Cayman is pretty dusty also, and I have thought of cleaning it. There is a youtube video on someone doing it, so you may want to check that out. It would be a sad day indeed if some water got somewhere it should not and the car wouldn't start.

I wouldn't spray it just for the simple reason the alternator is $1,770.80 . Just wipe it and make it look nice or spray and wipe carefully

The engine is exposed to the elements. It’ll be fine if you get it a little wet: it’s designed for that.

Just don’t use high pressure. Rinse it off with a gentle spray from the top and you’ll be fine. If it’s really grimy, Gunk foamy engine cleaner works pretty well.

I’ve washed a lot of engines including the Cayman. Follow the tips on YouTube and whatnot and you wont have a problem.

Here's the video I recall watching:
Not for the faint of heart, but results are pretty good and the engine did start after he was done.

Regular Simple Green can be corrosive to aluminum and isn’t the best choice: it can potentially stain the metal. Something designed for engines is probably a better way to go.

They make a motorsports version of SG that is supposedly non corrosive, but Gunk works well and is cheap.
