Default whine,whine,whine

Hello! New member here. I test drove a 2006 Base Boxster today and have questions about the car: noticeable gear whine in lower gears and a "notchy" gearshift. My '01 Base doesnt have any such issues. Do "they all do that" or is there a gearbox/trans axle problem? TIA

I have a 2006 base Boxster with the 5 speed transmission. There is no discernible whine from the gearbox. I don’t know what you mean by notchy gearshift. It does take more force to shift when the transmission is cold, but that’s normal of all manuals.

I don't understand the notchy gear shift comment, but most of my P-cars have had 'noisy' gearboxes. For sure my GT4 makes all sorts of fun noises..all totally normal. I took most of the padding out of my 981 Base Cayman (PDK) to better hear all the crazy stuff going on behind me...which was a fantastic mess of whining and mechanical wonder. LOTS of whining. My wife's new-to-her 981 Boxster S also likes to make fun tranny noises.

My guess is it's normal. But...best advice I can say is pay for a pre-purchase-inspection before you buy it.

Good luck!

987 Cayman S shift linkage

Cayman shift linkage alignment tool
The transmission in my 2007 Cayman is pretty notchy as well, and makes all kinds of mechanical sounds when I shift, which is quite a contrast to my 991. However, I just did a linkage adjustment saturday and it does feel better.

Thanks for the replies. I can move the shift lever of my '01 with just slight pressure but this one took a fair amount of pressure to get it,especially, into second. The whine is a sort of tubo whine; it increases with engine speed and didn't seem to be in 5th gear. No problem hearing exhaust all day long but that whine! Nothing at all in my '01. Thanks again.

My 07 Base Cayman 5-speed with 50k miles shifts fine and I've never heard anything I would call transmission whine. Nothing noteworthy at all about the transmission. Does its job and any noise it makes is more than overcome by engine noise.

Unless the car had been sitting outside in sub-freezing temperatures, doesn't sound normal to me at all.

I drove (pgh to columbus) to look at it. The sounds put me off so that's the end of that deal. Nice looking car but...
