Default All Boxes - Zach's 987.1 Cayman S Owner Journal

Hi everyone… picked up my 2006 Cayman S just under a year ago and figure I’ll start a thread here to highlight some of the changes and keep track of upgrades, maintenance, etc. Car has served as a weekend driver with occasional autocross, drive tours, and track day use.

Original owner went a little crazy when ordering the car from Prosche of Houston... all the go-fast goodies. Had a higher MSRP than any other 987.1 Cayman I’ve come across…

5/10/18
Picked up the car from a private seller in Lafayette, LA after a PPI at a local Porsche specialist and about a week of negotiations. 3 owner car all in Texas/Louisiana and previous owner had been using the car as a daily driver for over 4 years. About a 6-hour drive from Austin, TX to pick it up.

Saw some cool cars on I-10 during the maiden voyage home

Finally home sweet home

Took a few days to inspect and gawk at the car A few nicks here and there, but overall in really great shape

Paired up with another Rennlister to get the 20% discount on a Durametric Pro using this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-ma...iscount-3.html

Some other vehicles in the fleet (Mk5 GTI, 1972 VW Bay Window Bus)

5/6/18
Got my first CEL: P0455 EVAP system - Large Leak Detected
Replaced with new OEM Genuine Porsche gas cap, cleared codes, no further issues

Video I made to show how to swap gas caps

5/28/18
Put some new buttons on the HVAC

6/9/18
Took a trip to my Alma Mater and parked in my old reserved spot. Would have been nice to have a Porsche in college!

6/13/18
Found a set of perfectly sized OZ Allegerita w/ tires in the Rennlist classifieds. I’ll swap these on the CS for autocross and track days.
18x8.5 et52
18x10 et46
Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R

Some great upgrades to a nicely specced Cayman. PCCB’s are uncommon, especially on the 987.1, yours still look new too!

Enjoy it.

Thanks! Have been really enjoying it. Constantly in conflict between wanting to enjoy the car as Porsche originally created it versus what is best for occassional track days. Making modifications in the most restrained and well-thought way as possible. I'm more of a function over form kind of guy, it'll remain stock-ish to casual observers.

First autocross down at a joint event between Spokes Austin Car Club and SASCA (San Antonio Sport Car Association). Saw this EPIC time-attack prepped 914

Lucked out when another Rennlister posted for sale Boxster Spyder/Cayman R wheels right here in Austin. These are the lightest 19” wheels Porsche has ever made. Not trying to emulate a Cayman R, but couldn’t resist the lighter weight and was after a slightly more flush wheel/tire setup. Honestely, part of me misses the period-correct “Lobster Fork” wheels (I know… you hate them along with everyone else ha)

7/4/18
Did some work prepping the car for upcoming track day at Circuit of the Americas
- Mounted the track wheel/tire setup
- Installed LN 2qt. Deep Sump Kit (newer version w/ baffle & windage tray)
- Oil/filter/filter housing change w/ OEM filter & Motul X-cess 5w40

7/6/18
Took the car to Soulspeed Performance for & had them do the following:
- Required PCA pre-HPDE Tech Inspection
- Brake flush w/ Castrol SRF
- Alignment on factory suspension

7/8/18
Rolled 57k miles

7/14/18
Beautiful drive up to Lake Belton for some wakeboarding

7/20/18
Night out. Loved this view from above. Wish the bike was mine!

8/11/18
The local Hill Country PCA had a drive tour through the hill country to the “Cave Without a Name”. This was about a week after the Thailand soccer team cave incident and my girlfriend’s first ever time in a cave… surprised she did it considering all the media coverage

9/7-9/18
PCA Schnell Fest @ COTA for my first track days in the Cayman S. Had been about 10 years since I did an HPDE. They promoted me from Green to Blue run group after the first day. I had been the fastest on track most the day and the instructor said I was more advanced than his Blue student. Car ran flawlessly!

Anybody else lose these at the track?!? Had to replace one that popped off at COTA

10/18/18
Buddy hooked it me up with VIP pitlane passes for the USGP!

11/3/18
Made the drive up to Temple for a Porsche-only Cars & Coffee @ Werks11. Sweet GT3 RS in Lizard Green!

11/11/18
Camping trip in the Cayman with my girlfriend! Took the long, twisty route deep into the central Texas hill country on a 4-hour drive to Garner State Park. Drive was amazing and got engaged that weekend! Was super impressed how much cargo space the 987 has... had room for everything besides the dog ha

11/25/18
Prepping the car for upcoming track day:
- Borla S-Type catback exhaust
- Tow hitch receiver
Installed both myself in the garage. I must say the Borla is a NICE piece of kit and install was super easy too! The tow hitch receiver did take some work ton install though.

Last minute assembly of my tire trailer before a 3-hour trip to MSR-Houston the next day. Turned out alright besides the useless lighting system. Seems to be a problem everyone has since it’s a bad wiring design… going to get a standalone LED setup soon. Had to drive to the track in the dark with no trailer lights and yes I did get flack from a cop! Thankfully no ticket
