Just the leather cowl cover or the whole enchilada?

A couple things to note... this red interior does not have the “Porsche Exclusive CZW - Dashboard trim leather package” which includes the pieces you listed and the dash board side panels. One obvious way to know this is the center speaker would be round with stitching. Last thing to mention is your part numbers are wrong. You have the standard plastic ones listed. Which are way cheaper and what you currently already have. The CZW Package was $1545 from the factory... which I will assume will be a lot more after the fact. Here is a pic of it in my former PTS Spyder.

Here’s another pic of my former Spyder where you can see the stitching better:

n4n4nod, thanks for your insight. My parts may not be part of the "Porsche Exclusive CZW package" but I believe they are leather nevertheless. They are all listed under I981 (Leather equipment) and the defroster trims are described as "Defroster trim leather" in the parts catalog. It seems that the defroster trims are only offered in leather as the plastic dash doesn't require them. The plastic center speaker cover is listed separately (981 552 151 00 5Q0) from the leather one (981 552 151 01 5Q0) and at a considerably lower price ($58.12 vs $92.97).

You taught me well.

Ha! I guess I did... I didn’t look up the part numbers... Just noticed your reference photo with the red interior didn’t have the leather ones and then plugged your part numbers into the sunset parts website and noticed the low price. It must have defaulted to the plastic ones? Out of curiousity how much are the leather ones?

The leather center speaker cover is $92.97 (discount price $82.00 from GetPorscheParts.com) and the plastic one is $58.12 (discount price $51.26). Pretty reasonable for Porsche I'd say.

The parts are all here! Now I have to wait until it gets warmer to bring the car in for the installation.

The following is the weight of each part:
  • 981 552 101 20 A11 (dash) - 10 lbs 3.2 oz
  • 981 552 021 00 A11 (cowl) - 6.2 oz
  • 981 552 375 00 5Q0 (defroster trim L) - 4 oz
  • 981 552 376 00 5Q0 (defroster trim R) - 4 oz
  • 981 552 151 01 5Q0 (center cover) - 3.6 oz
The total weight is 11 lbs 5 oz. I will weigh the original parts once they come out and report.

Thanks for the intel!

I'm going to guess the difference in total weight between full leather vs. standard/rubber is 1.5 lbs. I just have my doubts about leather weighing less, but who knows.

This weight analysis of interior materials brings to mind the claim that Alcantara is 50% lighter than leather such that Lambo saves 11 lbs by using the material in the interior of its cars.

Only $2K list for the dash panel? That surprises me. I was thinking double that. I was looking to replace my Spyder's pull strap door panels with standard Boxster panels and the prices blew me away. I still pull.

The dash alone was $2.9K list. The whole enchilada was over $3.9K list but I paid $3.3K including tax.

It's a street driven Porsche, not a F1 car lol. Not everything is an exercise in the absolute maximization of performance, whether tangible or intangible. No matter how much weight I could possibly shed from either of my 2 Porsches, including my light-ish GT4, the GT4 will feel like the slow pig it is in comparison to my MV Agusta F4 1000 R. Life is short, I will gladly enjoy all the creature comforts and premium materials Porsche has to offer!!

Kidding aside, I like lightweight cars too, which is why I've owned 3 Spyders, a Cayman R, and now a GT4 among others. I appreciate Porsche's extra effort to make some of their cars just a little lighter.

My first Porsche, a 2008 Carrera S, had full leather and I guess it spoiled me. I definitely prefer it. Now years later, 7 of 10 have had full leather. But among my favorite Porsches, My Cayman R w/PCCB didn't, but loved it anyway.

lol. Exactly. If I really wanted to shed some weight I'd leave my wife at home but that comes with its own disadvantages.

Lambo probably also uses it due to Alcantara being headquartered in Italy.

You sure your defroster trims and center speaker are covered in leather? They look different than what mine were... Yours have no stitching. Maybe they did two different tiers of leather???

My build is for the track, with occasional street use... Though I agree that weight saving isn't a huge deal. Poop before the track day and you saved weight.
Biggest weight savings is in the seats, which I've already done.

My comment was because I once read that the leather dashed weighed about 5lbs more than rubber. But based on the comments in this thread, I'm second guessing that.

5lb isn't much, but at the opportunity to cut a little weight, make a little money, and help a fellow Rennlister get a good deal, I would have been willing to make the switch. But now knowing that leather is lighter, I'll gladly keep what I have.

I've stripped other track cars and the total weight savings comes out to less than 150lbs. While that is a lot of weight, that's also losing a lot of sound dampening and creature comforts for when the car is on the road. While we're still flirting near the 3000lb mark, 150lbs doesn't make a huge difference in lap times.

No worries and I knew you weren't being a fanatic. For sure weight matters. There are some people here (autocrossers come to mind) who have literally claimed to feel the difference from a scant few pounds, or a few hp. It's just funny.
