How bad is this damage? 981
 

Hey, looks like the frunk was slightly pushed in from a low speed accident. Wondering how serious this damage is, and if the car is worth keeping?

This is a car you own, or are looking at? Looks like probably a deer hit? If the longitudinal frame rails aren't bent, and the impact bumper / structure aren't heavily damaged, that seems like a car that could be competently fixed. If you own it, check the door gaps on both sides, and make sure the doors still operate properly. From the photos it looks like the damage is pretty isolated, and didn't make it to any suspension components. From other posts I've seen, it's fairly easy to damage that frunk pan. I looked at a GT4 that had hit some small rodent and had to have a the frunk pan replaced. It wouldn't have been a deal killer for me. That said, a car that has a repair history will always be worth less than a perfect original. Maybe you can get some diminished value compensation as well.

It is actually a car I own, I bought it CPO on 1/5, and the accident happened on 1/22. :(

Everything works fine. Original quote was for 6k to replace bumper and headlights at Porsche certified shop. When they removed the bumper, they quote shot up to 28k due to Porsche's standard of replacing the entire frame if there is ANY damage.

My insurance is looking to do total loss on the car. If I take the total loss settlement, I will be -$10k in the hole going in to a new car. If possible, I'd really like to see my options for keeping the car with a salvage title. Any advice?

I would get some other quotes

In the third photo, the frunk opening looks bent in a little bit on the passenger side and the hood shut line looks a bit tight on that side, too.

Take a tape measure and measure from several points (including the frunk tub corners) criss cross and compare lengths, Most manufacturers want things square within 2mm. If much more than that, it probably needs the full $28K fix.

You could try other body shops. Although a Porsche certified shop would know best. Plus, the insurance company now has the dealer estimate and may insist on using that.

Even if you repair it, it will likely be worth $10k less as a trade later.
Might as well go for a new one.

Also it's looking like Porsche will only sell the aluminum chassis parts on a 981 to a Porsche certified shop.

Thanks for the responses! I have confirmed with the shop that it is off by 5mm. How out of range is that?

Also, I bought this car with the intention of keeping it as long as possible, which is still my intention. Insurance will make me whole on the value of the vehicle. I went in to the loan with a big negative equity (separate loan, so car will be paid off).

If at all possible, I'd like to get the car fixed. I was talking to a public insurance adjuster and he told me that you can actually still take a total loss without a salvage title if it gets fixed (this also depends if the insurance requires the 28k fix or the 6k fix). I will have to work that out with the insurance though.

Friend got rear ended in his CRV. Insurance said total it. Back door opened, but quarter was bent. He didn't care about the looks because his daughter was getting her license soon. We figured if he can buy it back for $500, and pull the corner like we did when we had telephone poles it would be great for her since it ran well and was presentable other than the dent.

Took it to the shop the local PCA folks use. Took three seconds, owner said yes you can tie a chain around a tree and pull a lot out and drive it for a long time. but since it was bent once, the crumple zone is now compromised. That scared him. That scares PCNA. That's probably why the whole frame has to be replaced.

Really sorry about the damage, but this has been a VERY informative thread.

Now, my opinion, (which is probably not worth 2 cents). This would only apply to someone planning on keeping the car a long time, (and not planning on marrying and getting kids) is buy it back, cheaply, get it fixed well, and cheaply. As far as the safety of crumple zones, this one was barely dented, and should have a lot of safety left in it.

Why are they replacing the headlights ? They look fine.
It's hard to tell what is damaged in the photo.

Did it drive straight after the accident?
Can you slap on a new $500 bumper, keep the headlights, and just drive it ?

When you say the whole frame do you mean the entire front clip as shown in the first picture?

Why not just the tub or the damaged parts of the tub?

Can I ask what the car hit?
