981 Tire wear and Pzero vs Pilot4s
My recently acquired CGTS came with front tires that look more worn out that the rears. I thought the rears might have been replaced, but the manufacturing date on the tires says the front are only a few weeks older. I wonder if the front tires just wear out faster on these cars or if the car is out of alignment and that made the fronts wear out faster?
Now that I have this problem, I have a few choices:
1) Replace fronts with PZeros and get an alignment
2) Swap all four tires to Michelin Pilot4s
3) Drive harder to wear out the rears
I like the Michelin pilots on my BMW (I just bought a full set for my other car last week since my front tire met a rock on the Angeles crest highway), but unsure if they really make a world of difference on the Cayman. Any feedback from folks who went from Pzeros to the new 4S would be much appreciated.

I had Pzeros and switched to the Pilot Sport 4S. Worth the upgrade. The Pilots are a great tire whereas the Pzeros are just ok. I understand not wanting to get rid of perfectly good tires though, so at least if you just got new rears they will wear about twice as fast as the fronts, and then you will be ready to get four new tires at about the same time. I'd probably just go ahead and get the 4Ss though.

Its commonly agreed that Cayman and boxsters wear out the rear tires faster than the fronts. i have `17.5k miles on my OEM good years and the fronts have about 4/32” nds on them and the rears are at the wear bars and need to be replaced.
Invest a few dollars in a tread depth gauge - i check my tread depth and tire pressure way to often.

a few questions:
how many miles on the car ?
are all 4 tires the same brand and model. ?
are the tires properly inflated ?
is the wear across the tread even ?
to answer your questions:
1. My understanding is that most guys couldn’t get rid of their P Zeros fast enough.
2. PS4S has gotten great reviews from guys that have switched to them.
If i were you I’d consult with a good tire shop and see what they recommend but my inclination would be to start fresh with an alignment and a set of PS4S.
good Luck.

Generally speaking, CGTS front tires will last twice as long as the rears. My PZero rears needed replacement at 12.5k miles. So, unless your fronts are really toast just give the rears time to catch-up wear wise. Then replace all four with the tire de jour.

I took a closer look at the tires again, and I seem to have another problem. My front tires seem to have dry rotted as well.
With a PCA fun run coming up soon, I think I will need to change em out.

They All Do That(tm). Very common with the Pirelli compound, not a huge deal unless the cracking goes between the treads and into the tire body itself.

Probably just preaching to the choir...but have the 4S's on my car and absolutely love them. Drive a lot in rain...so that matters. Wife has worn Goodyear F1's on her Boxster S...soon to be going to 4S's in the coming months.

I agree. I just got them put on my other car (3 series) and they are pretty great.

In the UK Pirelli will replace/upgrade to N1 compound for free. Worth checking out.

Get the PS4S all the way around. You won't regret it.

I have had 3 sets of tires on my GTS over the course of 12k miles. It came with Good Year Eagle F1's, picked up two nails in those so I switched to PZeros, hated them, so then switched to Michelin PS4S.
Pzeros are by far the worst of the three - loud, super hard ride, almost no grip in cold weather. Good Year's were fair, probably would have kept them but somehow I got 2 nails in rears. The Michelin PS4S are just better in all aspects - dry grip is awesome, SO much quieter than the Pzeros, soft riding, great in cold weather - IMO there is no better tire in it's class. Absolutely worth the cost.

The warranty from Pirelli is not the same as from Porsche - i had mine done last month , at 3.5 years old
