Sold my 981 and looking for what's next
I figured this would be a good place to ask, since I'm sure many people here have been in a similar spot. I sold my 981 CS in the fall. Lo and behold, I now miss my 981, and I'm thinking of cars to replace it with. What I'm struggling with is what that should be. My 981 was my first Porsche, and also my daily driver. Whenever I used it as my daily driver, I couldn't help but think that it was a bit much, but now I miss having a Porsche in my life.
What should I get to replace my car? I need something that can fit a rear facing car seat at some point, so I have a feeling I may need two cars. As my "fun" car, I'm trying to decide between a 987 Spyder (which I've always been interested in), an aircooled 911, or going back and getting another 981. Would that last choice be silly, especially since I've only had one Porsche so far?

Only you know if you'll be able to afford two cars or have to sell the sports car to buy the baby hauler. If I had to go to a baby hauler as my only car, I'd take a close look at a Macan S, but that's just me.
Also, if the "at some point" time frame is 2-3 years down the road, I'd buy the sports car and reassess the situation once the baby is on the way. Stuff happens and you can't get time back once it passes.

None of the cars you mentioned will accommodate a modern rear facing child restraint in a manner that is easy to utilize. So, if these are your only three choices, it's either own a sports car for a while, then buy an additional or replacement vehicle to haul the baby.

I would describe the air-cooled cars as more "hobby" cars as there will always be things that need attention due to age. Depends if you enjoy working on cars.

The Spyder will definitely be more raw and focused as compared to the 981 and with the right roads it is magical. It’s also incredibly reliable and if you find one with the options you want you won’t have much to modify or change to make it the perfect sports car.
The air cooled cars are also an incredible experience and they will be a much bigger departure from your 981. They are all old now so don’t expect it to be easy to find a nice one that hasn’t been thrashed or worn. I’ve been chipping away at my Targa for 18 months now and I still find little details that I want to fix and improve, but I enjoy that aspect of ownership. 993’s are still in the $50 - 60’s price range, 964’s OTOH have started climbing and only higher mileage cars are in this range. Lower mileage nice examples are above $80 for coupes. The G body cars are also available in this price range and they still have a more modern shifter which makes them much easier to drive/enjoy.
Since you’re asking opinions I wouldn’t bother with the Panamera or 991, neither are going to be as fun as the 981 and since you already intend to add a daily driver I would get something more focused.
Good luck with the search, the hunt is always fun!

I was in a very similar situation a few years ago. Had a 981, my first Porsche, as my daily and sold it as we had our first child on the way. Bought a B8.5 S4 as my new daily that could also fit a car seat. Missed the 981 dearly and so about one year ago I picked up a 987.2. It cost me about $20k less than my 981 and delivered a very similar driving experience. So now I have the S4 which a a terrific powerful and reliable DD and the 987.2 for a fun car. Wife is about to sell her daily and pick up a GLK which will serve as the family car when we go out together. Between the S4, 987.2, and now a crossover SUV we have our bases covered pretty well.

I'd probably get a 991 just to try something different, but I've gotten the same car back to back before so don't feel bad. Traded a 987, missed it, bought back the same car from the dealer a few $$ poorer.
