Default Throttle body 981

Hi,

Does anyone have experience with Throttle body cleaning or even replacement of the TB for the 981 Boxster? Any tips regarding the cleaning? How often do you do it? If it has to be replaced, how much is approximately the part?
Thanks in advance,
John

Google is your friend on the price of the TB.. As for cleaning and getting access to it.. It's pretty easy once you get the engine cover off.. However, working on 981 is not back friendly.. Just make sure you have the proper hand tools like a swivel sockets and some small ratcheting wrenches if you need to take off the TB..

Thank you, appreciate it! This is actually something I could not find any information about, neither on google, youtube, pca nor here, therefore I started the thread. It seem that not many people clean their TB on a 981?? Anyway, I decided to go the easy way. I will bring my car to my indy mechanic and get it done there. He knows what his doing and does it always for a reasonable rate. Will try to take some pictures and report back.

thanks

No worries and wasn't trying to be sarcastic on the google part.. Here's what the engine bay looks like.. If you are not having idling issues, TB cleaning is really not necessary.. If anything you may want to see if you have oil in your plenum/intake runners.. if so, clean'em and get an oil catch can installed.. Search for "d00d" on his build journey. He has a great DIY oil catch can install.

Is very helpful thank you. I have actually few issues, I think dirty TB is responsible for: 1. Some shaky idle +-100rpm, 2. High mpg. Also the last owner drove lots of short trips, so I assume this might have also have created a quite dirty TB. I thought might be worth to look at the TB.

if you have the time, i would DIY.. otherwise, the bill for labor can rack up pretty quickly..

My mechanic said 1.5-2 hours labor and he charges 100 hour, so I hope it will be not too crazy.

Ben, did you install that intake manifold & plenum yourself? How tough was that?

I'm fairly adept at DIY on my turbo, so I'm just learning about my new 981..

Yup... it wasn’t difficult just gotta be limber and wedge yourself in the trunk to work. PM me if you have questions.

@benben01 was the upgrade worth it? I am thinking maybe to go for the 2.7 IPD plenum with GT3 82mm TB (seem you have the same?). Do you feel the difference?

The IPD with GT3 TB on the GT4 is not noticeable unless you have the new larger intake runners. You biggest bang for the buck will be sport headers. If you TB is gumm'ed up and can't be cleaned, I would suggest getting a replacement. Shouldn't be too costly as it is a generic Bosch unit. I got my GT3 TB by Bosch for $130 new.

Great, thank you! If I get the replacement, does it have to be the exact same one or can I fit one in from a bigger engine without any further modification?

I would stick with the exact same size TB.. Otherwise, you will run the risk of getting a check engine light.

Had the TB of my 981 boxster cleaned and wanted to report back. Took the car to my trusted indy and he cleaned up the TB and did also cleaning of the carbon build ups. He showed me a picture of the TB and it was really not that bad. The initial issue remained, the engine has still some shaky idle with +- 100 rpm but what I have noticed immediately after the cleaning is that the engine seems to "breath" better and has a better sound. All together, I payed 300 dollars. Was it worth it? seriously I dont know, I guess I could have waited another 30 or 40k miles but at the end I think it was not the worst 300 bucks I have spent. Thoughts?
