Cayman Dash Clock Options...

... another thread on options for that nearly useless stopwatch on the 987.2 dash.
I do not have PCM because of Japan navi installation instead, so I do not have the <Set>, <Chrono>, <Clock> option on the on board computer menu.
Which, I am not even sure was an option on any 987.2 market?

My existing stopwatch:

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...70e3440ede.jpg

As others have noted the lower sub-register would make a great analog clock, but later models only allow the upper sub-register as a digital clock?
Has anyone had this function (for either sub-register enabled as a clock) activated in a non-PCM car?

Or, what are the chances of successfully enabling a later model Macan or similar actual clock clock as a clock:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...0a8c3cef1e.jpg

As others have noted, the standard 52mm gauge hole also accepts a conventional VDO, which is historically very Porsche (same style as my old 2.7S), which would only require normal battery and dash light connections:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3e49f98c04.jpg

I used to have a eight-day manual wind chronometer in my dash, which winding and setting was a great warm up routine, and I miss the functionality...

Thanks for any tips or ideas!

I don't know about options but that manual wind is next level cool

It was!
From a Sud Aviation Caravelle about the same year as the S800.

10,000 rpm and a five-gauge dash...

Cayman Coding via PIWIS

I've just found these guys locally...
They appear to be quite talented with their PIWIS, and have a reasonable menu of coding options for various late model Porsche.
Including:
  • One touch winker option set - three or five winks.
  • Daylight running light activation.
  • Idle stop memory state remember.
  • Passenger mirror drop on reverse.
  • PCM lock release.
  • Auto light dimming slow down.
  • Sport chrono to dash illumination interlock.
  • G-force display on.
  • 5km/h auto door lock disable.
I rather like the idea of five winks for lane changing (instead of three), and I cannot turn on my outboard front fog lights (except in Home mode, and not with any other switch combo), so I've pinged them about possible coding options.
DRLs might be good too.

We shall see what turns up...

How do I turn the out-board lower lamps on?

Kuro Neko 02-14-2019 05:40 AM

After numerous investigations, it seems there is no way to either enable or install a later model clock to replace the stop watch in a 987.2.
Porsche and after-market PIWIS jockeys are unable to suggest anything.
Pity!

Now seriously looking at the VDO-classic option, and maybe this one with the minute markers...
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...367e74349d.jpg

I'd still like to know how to turn on my fogs though!

It's been a while since I had my 987...but I *thought* you turned the front fog lights on by pulling the headlight dial out (toward you) once. Pull it out further and it should be the rear-fog/safety light. Hopefully that's correct.

987.2 Fog Lights?

Thanks, as I had thought this was the case too...
The English language version of the manual says just that too, but my Japanese language version, and my Japanese market switch only has one pull detent (for the rear as you note, matching the icon too).

The onboard menu doesn't include any lighting options either.

They do however come on automatically with the light switch in the <Home> position.
But without a physical switch, I cannot see how they could be activated for driving.

I thought perhaps high beam on with parking only, but nope.

One dealer I visited suggested this was normal.
Which it may be for Japanese Cayman, as the manual says, 'In Some Countries, Difference are Possible Due to Provisions of Law'.
But, AFAIK there is no limitation on fogs with main lamps as most JDM, including our CR-V have just that.

Appreciate the comment!

Cayman S - CAN Bus - Sport Chrono Stopwatch Pin Out Table

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...a425972305.jpg

With a trim removing tool (knowing where the clips are helps) you can easily remove your Sport Chrono stopwatch.
Investigating further with my DMM, it appears this is the pin out of the Cayman S stopwatch:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...5aac035efa.jpg

With this information, it seems everything needed to power a conventional 52mm dash clock is right there in the (BMW part numbered) MQS / TE Connectivity connector.
All that is needed is a pigtail to connect the clock spade connectors to the car's MQS plug.

I like the clean lines of the VDO Cockpit line over other options, as it ties back to both my 356 and 911S dash:

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4e0aae88b.jpeg
There is another version with remote adjuster, but this needs more wiring and dash mod to install the + / - switch.
This version has little buttons adjacent to the 4 and 8 markers.

I was however tempted by a Benz IWC:

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...5243304f37.jpg

The VDO spec sheet includes the DIN standard numbering to help too:

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...24b8eedb46.png
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...3e95730b07.png
At <10mA static load, the Cayman's 95Ah battery can power for a year or more, so I am not worried about the parked load.
The MQS body needed:
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...c785520c3c.jpg

With male pins:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...63a48027ef.jpg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...866d5f28da.jpg

Heat shrink, spade connectors, and some two-part epoxy (JB Weld) to fill the connector body and secure the pins.
While only three pins are needed for connectivity, I used a fourth to help orientate the connector with the dash loom plug.

With no need for fuse box taps, additional wiring, or other loom mods, hopefully it will be a pure plug-and-play option.
Our ten day national break for the enthronement, should allow me to put it together...

I've seen a thread where someone put an oil temp gauge in there... which I think is the most useful upgrade.

There is also this one with a clock: https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-...ash-clock.html

An oil temp would be good, yes!
With a button to switch between engine and transmission perhaps too...
CAN bus details I think include this data, but the clock is a no-programming needed option, and hopefully as easy as plugging it in to the existing loom.

The VDO fits perfectly physically:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...1b38ead5b7.jpg

Here's the spade connector to MQS connector pigtail:

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...b596daa879.jpg

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...d2521502da.jpg

T8 driver to remove 4x screws securing the gauge carrier plate:

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...304b54d376.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...603b95567a.jpg

The VDO gauge's ferrule tightens up nicely to the pod carrier hole.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...ca58ead8a8.jpg

The 4x T6 screws that need to be undone to allow OEM stopwatch to be removed, can then be tightened to lock the VDO gauge ferrule in place.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...33038c2597.jpg

The OEM 52mm holed, gauge carrier also retains its ability to swing left or right like the stopwatch did too...

Next, when I get the time, I will fit back in car and test the illumination, and confirm the native loom 12V supply doesn't do any strange switching off or similar.
I already know the 58 illumination contact does some door-open and lock pulses, but it looks like it stays on with the rest of the dash lights all the time...

Kuro Neko 05-06-2019 06:31 AM

Before:

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...e6277dd339.jpg

After:

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...ae74c3781a.jpg

A quick test today confirms the 12V supply does not appear to be switched and the illumination (DIN 58) is CAN bus controlled by door lock, door open, ignition on, and lights on.
So, the clock remains illuminated with lights on, and also comes on when you open the door, or lock with the remote - then goes off after 5 seconds or so...

Without having to tap or modify the Cayman dash loom, or add any additional wires, this seems a good option to replace the otherwise low-use stopwatch!

how about an oil temp gauge instead of a clock!

True words, true words.
I am however a function over form driver, and though the stopwatch is indeed pretty, its nearly useless status signaled its demise...

One option not discussed above is to replace the VDO face with a face from the Macan clock also shown.
I've done numerous similar replacements, but the dead sub-register (without hands, or fake hands like Singer's fake Heuer) is nearly as bad as the initial problem.

Whoo hoo.
Now we're talking.
Assume plumbed straight to conventional analog sender, and not CAN integrated?
Or, did you make a DAC of some sort?

Congrats.
Supernice result and completely reversible!
