PDK replacement question
Is there an independent shop that has swapped in a used PDK? I understand that a PIWIS is necessary, which I suppose only authorized Porsche dealers have. Any threads discussing PDK replacement with a used PDK, i.e. not a warranty swap, would be helpful. TIA

Some techs have the PIWIS but as I understand it, Porsche is very particular about who gets a replacement transmission and I haven’t heard of anyone outside of the dealer network replacing these. You may be able to negotiate some discount through your dealer and there is a core exchange to consider.

I know a shop in San Diego that has the necessary PIWIS but again I’m not sure if Porsche is allowing transmissions to be shipped anywhere outside the dealer network.

Try to call Porsche USA and negotiate with them about a solution. Depending on the age and service level of your call they might take over some of the replacement cost, even when outside of warranty. Random catastrophic PDK failures are well known and there are tons of reports about it here in forum. There is a longer discussion in the 991 section, you may want to have a look and see what solutions they were discussing about.

Why replace the PDK? Seems obvious but sharing some other info regarding the issue, the car, and precipitating conditions would help folks in the future...

I appreciate everyone's input on this thread. The back story is I was considering buying an 09 Boxster S with 34k miles from an auction that listed the damage as "mechanical." It also stated the engine ran when it arrived at the lot. Without being able to look it over since I am in Texas and the BS is in New York, it seems like a reasonable conclusion that if the engine ran and it had mechanical problems such that someone would want to auction a relatively low mileage, clean titled car with no significant damage, that it was the PDK that had s**t the bed. I was able to find examples where folks paid about $15k to the authorized Porsche dealer to have the PDK replaced. Hence why I was asking about independent or shade tree solutions. At that point in the discussion my location was irrelevant, I just want to know if it had/can be done. The car went over the block Monday at $9200, pending seller approval, which if you factor in auction fees, transportation to wherever, and about $15k to take it to a dealer, you end up with about $25k in the car, which I think is somewhere around FMV for an 09 BS, so it just doesn't make sense at that point. I apologize for the poorly constructed sentences, and again thanks for everyone's input.

Apologize in advance for this post in advance, but was wondering how common it is for PDKs fail? I saw someone on Planet 9 mention something about failing PDKs in a thread on Rennlist and I ended up finding it here...

Many of the posts seem to be older and are only effecting 911s. I was wondering if anyone with Caymans or Boxsters have experienced any issues like the ones discussed in this thread?
Thanks!
