One thing I seem to be missing is why you want to change. Is there a specific hole with the 981 that only a 997 or 718 will fill? Or is it just a matter of being time for something new?

Are these cars for autocross and track days only? That's all that is mentioned.

The 981 is a daily driver as well as my weekend "race car"
I guess I'm looking for a little more pep, I've had a 718 loner and it's a great car. The sound isn't an issue. But it just didn't make me want to give up my old girl.
Going on 4 yrs, the resale value is probably the best it will be for a while and I want to get the most out of it.
As far as the Carrera, I miss dancing with the rear end.
Thanks all for your help !

It depends on what you really want most.

I want to keep my car until I am too old to drive it.

Therefore, I wanted a big na six. Not a turbo 4.

I understand the itch to get something new. You have to ask yourself is it worth it? The 718 is faster and has more torque, but it is much more expensive and of course has the 4 cylinder. The 911 is also faster, but doesn't have the mid-engine character and has more outdated tech (if you're looking at a 997). Since you're daily driving it, I'd get a 991 Carrera, or CS if you can stretch the budget a little. One can be had for 718 money, and I would rather have the 991. But overall, price also being a factor, I'd keep and enjoy your 981. I have a base 981 Cayman with a 6 speed and even though I frequently window shop for other cars, every time I drive it I wonder what more could I really want?

There's a reason why 981 pricing are still holding up and there are tons of CPO 718s...

The 981 is one of the best looking cars ever made. 718 is a step down IMO.

If you really want more power get a lightly used 981S.
Exactly!

Go drive one and see if you're in the "I need something new bucket" or you're happy with what you've got. I honestly don't think one is any better than the other, I think the sharper lines on the 718 are quite attractive, and don't have a problem with the engine note, it's got a more modern stereo for those times you're stuck in traffic and can't listen to the glorious motor. Porsche has a long history with four cylinder motors so that should turn anyone off, it's all just personal preference, would getting this car give you something you feel your missing? A special color, heated steering wheel, whatever, if so and you can financially do it, then go for it. Why not? Your 981 then becomes a used car someone else can enjoy, so win win!

Yep you hit the nail on the head. I guess as long as I can push in the clutch , I'll keep her.
Besides I can enjoy zero to 60 longer !
What has been interesting is that all the comments have been positive ! Very refreshing in this day of negativity .
Happy safe thanksgiving to all.
Now should someone make an offer I couldn't refuse...…...

IMHO, and I've owned (and tracked) all 3 (981, 981S and now a 781GTS)...I'd pick the 718 GTS every time. In every measurable aspect the 718 is better (to me). I originally had a launch vehicle 718S but it didn't have the PSE and the sound was a big letdown from my raucous 981S with Borla catback. That said, the new GTS definitely sounds MUCH better than the 718S did. Wildly so. I'm happy. Love the styling as well. Ymmv.

How's it as a daily driver , In stop-n-no-go traffic?

Quiet and composed when you want it to be. Put the dial into O and it’s a compliant, no-wake-the-neighbors...almost downright sedate driving experience. Couple that with the available large frunk and modest trunk...it’s a perfect multi day getaway car. I would daily drive mine, no question, if I didn’t have several other options.

Good thread. Isn't it fantastic we have a choice.

I could not be happier with my used '14 981 S. It really really really makes me happy. I have no driving talent to speak of but I enjoy attempting to move it rapidly along with the 6MT, traffic and local speed limits permitting.

The 781 is a fantastic car and a looks to be an improvement in many ways over the 981. It is very much a personal choice -- as many have said, Turbo 4 vs a NA 6. I can say "for me" trading my 981 S for a base 718 would not make a lot of sense, I plan to keep my 981 for quite a while. In fact, that decision is reinforced everytime I roll down the windows and get on it on an on ramp. That flat six wail sets the hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up lol. I love it.

Quick Reply: Keep the 981 or git a new 781 ?
