Windshield replacement with Safelite
Looking to replace my windshield for my 2014 boxster. Dealer gave me a quote of 1500!! I just calculated on the homepage of safelite and they gave me a quote of 350? Are there any experiences with them? I heard there are no aftermarket windshields for the 981 and they would use the same vendor as Porsche. Any tips would be highly appreciated.

Do you get your oil changed at Jiffy Lube as well?

Here are my tips after having Safelite replace the windshield in my '09 Cayman last year. Mine with original and it pained me to have it replaced, but it worked out well.
1) Take it to the Safelite shop and leave it as long as necessary (a day should do it) for them to do the work. Better tools, experienced staff and work area.
2) Insist on an OE W/S. Not sure an aftermarket was available for mine anyway, but play the "this ain't no Accord" replacement you are are dealing with. Nicely, of course. Pay the diff for OE if you have to.
3) Ask how quickly they can get another W/S if there is a problem with the first one. Also, keep this in mind scheduling. Monday might be better day to have this done than Friday or Saturday.
4) When you pick up the car, really look over their work closely including the seal on the outside and inside. Look for paint or dash damage from their tools, or residual dirt.
After all this, they did a good job (I'd say a B+) at the Airpark Safelite here in Scottsdale.
I had to take it back as they did not ensure the seal was set completely and they left a little dirt on the dash. Both problems were resolved w/o issue.
Good luck,
Eddie

Tyson’s Porsche of all places sent me to a small outfit called “Windshield City” in Chantilly, who did a great job. They used Porsche glass and the total cost was less than $900. Of course if you are not in NoVa, it won’t be as easy.

I had my Targa done at a Safelight and did exactly what Eddie suggested although I watched them do the install and hung out with the installers to make sure it all went well. Note that I had to bring it in a second time, first time the glass wasn’t perfect and they wouldn’t install it so they ordered a new one and made me come back. They also decided that they wanted to bring in their installer with more experience. Take your time with them and they’ll get it done right.

Doesn't the cost become irrelevant given that most insurance cover replacement under comprehensive? Is there a CAP on how much insurance will cover?
Also, there is a thread on Planet-9 regarding Windshield rubber/sealing melting. Are there any long term durability with Safelite vs OEM?

one thing that is not mentioned is the rear view mirror. on the 981 its a bit tricky to put back together. make sure all trims are tight (no gaps) and functioning properly (there are sensor plugs inside of it).

Thank you all for your answers. Do you all remember what they charged you?

I used safelite to replace the windshield in my GT4. They used the same glass as OEM, stamped "Plinkerton"... or a name similar to that. I had them do the installation at my home. The guy was very meticulous and I was pretty happy with the work. I would use them again. Cost me $530. Your quote for $350 seems like a good deal.

I just had mine done in the GT4 on Friday. OE glass plus installation was right around $1000. If they have a non-OE glass available the price drops buy about $450. The OE glass is apparently a typical Porsche expense. One thing to have them watch for is damage to the VIN tag and mount under the glass. This was not the first windshield put in mine and apparently the last shop destroyed the mount.

I have used Safelite on my Boxster as well as other cars. Absolutely take the car in and check the work after they are done. I have not had any issues with them, as they use OE, and are much less expensive than the dealer.

I had Safelite do the windshield on my Honda Accord a number of years ago. They will never touch another of my cars. The installer was a total grenade, scratched my car, left out the bottom seal so it had wind noise, left off a few other parts, and I made them redo it. Use a reputable local glass shop.
