To me, they look almost the same.
I took a loaner one day of a 718 cayman and it looked more or less like my 981.
It felt more peppy though.

It's actually the rear end of the 718 that doesn't look good on the car. Porsche cars are getting to busy on the backside, with all their letters, numbers, etc. Let's face it, not very difficult to recognize it's a Porsche & then add PORSCHE + whatever, just makes it look tacky.

I prefer my 981 Cayman, but I like the 718 almost as much. They're just good looking cars.

+1 to that. I own a 981 but I probably couldn't tell the difference between it and a 718 if it ran over me.

The rear treatments are more similar than you might think, if you ever have a chance to see them both parked next to each other. They basically glued some big PORSCHE letters onto a surface that was already present on the 981 but not calling attention to itself. Tacky IMHO, but 500 million not-so-red Chinese don't give a crap about my opinion on the subject. They are too busy buying cars...

The differences in looks between the 981 and the 781 are not substantial. They're the type of differences that most of us, as Porsche owners and enthusiasts, notice... but it is kind of like how a parent of twins sees their children. The parent sees the differences right away, but most strangers wouldn't notice.

981 is better from any angle IMO. Rear is worst on 718. I saw a Ferrari 360 on the Barrett-Jackson auction this weekend and realized how similar the lines of the 981 cars are especially from the front and front quarter angle. 981 cars inherited Carrera GT styling themes, but the dead ahead front view of the 981 cars is coincidentally similar to the F360.

I have a 987, 981, and 718 Cayman. I think they all look good!

Something about the lower front of the 718 reminds me of my Macan. 981 front end is more aggressive imo.
