Default My Spyder Introduction Thread

I am moving over here on the water cooled side of Rennlist after many years on the 993 Forum. Having just sold my 993 C4S and taken delivery of a 987.2 Boxster Spyder, I would like to introduce myself and, more importantly, my car. This is a 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder in Basalt Black Metallic with Carrera Red full natural leather and Alcantara interior. It has manual transmission and lightweight bucket seats. My car is optioned with the Sport Chrono Package, Sport Exhaust, Sport Short Shift, leather sunvisors, extended Alcantara interior package, Automatic Climate Control, Sound Package Plus, Bluetooth Interface, Universal Audio Interface, CDR-30, self dimming mirrors and rain sensor, Bi-Xenon headlights with Dynamic Cornering lights, and others (but no cup holders). My Spyder has spent its entire life in Southern California, has only 22,000 miles on the clock, and is in beautiful unmodified condition. Last night I had my first drive, and the car was thrilling. It was light, nimble, powerful, and fast, seemingly much faster and more torque-y than my 993. The lightweight buckets were superbly supportive and comfortable. The steering was perfectly weighted and responsive. The shift action was precise and crisp. The throttle response pinned me to the seat. And I found the brakes to be very good, though I know some on this forum upgrade the master cylinder for a more firm pedal. It is just a great car, and feels like a worthy successor to my beloved 993 C4S. Me? Middle-aged guy, Seattle native, lifelong Porsche enthusiast. This is my third Porsche, after a 1973 911S followed by a 1997 993 C4S. I hope to find the same camaraderie, knowledge base, and passion here that I enjoyed so much on the 993 Forum.

A few more pictures. That bright California sun is not very friendly to either the Basalt Black Metallic paint or the Carrera Red interior!

Gorgeous. I've been looking for your car's cousin, but in white. Congrats!

Congrats and welcome to the Spyder club! Great color choice and you have all the right options on your car!

Are you going to bring it to Rennsport next month?

Hey Afshin! You and I exchanged PMs previously when I mistakenly thought yours was the car offered for sale in the Rennlist Classifieds. You advised me to hold out for lightweight buckets, and you can see that I heeded your advice. Thanks for the compliment, I do like the color combination, having previously owned a black on black car that new seems dull by comparison. I have been considering going to Rennsport, because in searching for this car and selling my 993 I have met so many great people who will be there. I will let you know if I am going, and maybe we can meet up.

Silver Surfer - beautiful car. We have an upcoming autocross at Bremerton this Saturday. There's already two Spyder's signed up for the event (mine included). Perhaps you can join us?

Piling on with the congrats (although there's always a pang of regret whenever So Cal loses another Spyder to distant pastures). Those red sunvisors really add something IMO - nice!

Enjoy and welcome to Spyder Nation.

Hey! Welcome to Spyder Nation! You have picked up an AWESOME Gen 1. Love the color combo.

Hey - I'm just under taking a min-study on VINs. I have Afshin's and a bunch of others. I'd be interested to see where yours was in the production line up. If your interested please PM your VIN, I'll add it in, and send you the list.

Again congrats. And I know exactly what you are going through with leaving the 993 C4S and getting into what many of us feel is the BEST of the water-cooled.

Cheers!

Congrats! A Spyder is an awesome ride. Black/Red combo is a classic. Was it hard to let go off 993 C4S? In terms of driving experience, does Spyder offer something better than 993? I personally would have found it difficult to dump a 993! But, then, I never owned one!

Hey, as a middle age Cayman R owner, I know exactly what you mean about the way these tweaked 987s feel. I had a couple of early, '70s 911s and this chassis feels like a natural extension of those Porsches. Congrats on a great looking car!

I’ve driven a 993 on some back roads and I have a 964. If I had to choose between the three I would go with the Spyder, to me it remains the best handling sports car I’ve ever driven and still retains the analog feel of the older Porsches. Ideally having one air cooled and one Spyder is the perfect garage, they are both great experiences.

Natural extension is a great way to describe it!
