Smile 1st Porsche

Hi everyone, just introducing myself and scanning the forum for inspirations and mods, well the usual when first getting a new toy. Tom here, from New Braunfels TX in the great Hill Country with awesome roads.
Signed up with PCA and had a great first ride-out with the local club in San Antonio.
Got my first Porsche, a bit buyers remorse, in that I only went for the base model and not the S, especially after coming from a Lexus IS350 F-Sport which I sold for this one. However, even with less power and torque, the driving experience is like no other I ever had, and I had lots of cars, from GTI to a 335i.
Anyway, looking forward to meet up with more experienced owners and surely have to learn a lot, and eventually move on to a S or even GTS, but for now this 2014 has to last for the next 5 Years (had to promise my boss/wife, to keep a car for longer than my average 2 Year ;-)

2014 Cayman!

Nice car! And no way you’ll be able to keep it for five years.

You're probably right, but I prepared for it with a 5 Year full extended warranty, so it will definitely be replaced by than ;-)

Welcome! Lots of love here for the base. It may seem underpowered -- perhaps coming off the line from a standing start -- but these cars are all about what happens when they are under way and in the twisties. At that point, once they're in their element, few cars can keep up and pricier/more powerful machinery can be humbled. It's a great Porsche to own -- whether it be your first or fifth -- and I bet the remorse dissipates as you spend more time behind the wheel. Enjoy!

Congrats and enjoy your permagrin! A Porsche and especially the Boxster/Cayman are really special cars.

As far as the base vs. the S, I think you will find plenty to enjoy with the base. As Jock mentioned above, on your Hill Country twisties, top speed is not a factor, and you can pull plenty of torque by keeping the revs up. As the old saying goes, it is a lot more fun (and rewarding) to drive a slow car fast (not that the base Cayman is slow)......

Gorgeous car and don't have any regrets I think the base is the sweet spot in the lineup. The closer ratios in the manual make a world of difference for fun on the street

Hey buddy - I owned the EXACT car like yours and LOVED that super revvy 2.8. What an engine. The key point in working with it is to keep your revs in the sweet zone between 4000 and 5500. There's where your power is. Mine was PDK and I drove in manual mode 98% of the time. So get out and have some fun with it. DO NOT BABY it. DO NOT LUG the engine. Porsches are a different car - they love to be driven hard.

Congrats! Join H2 nearby and you'll be plenty happy with the power - great car to run at that track and only a few min away from you.

I wouldn't kick yourself to hard on the base. I had a 981 and 987 base for 5 or 6 years and really enjoyed them. If for some reason I sold my current car, I'd be happy to return to a 981 base. These cars are about the corner...not the straightaway. :-) Congrats. Welcome to Porsche.

Thanks, did my first ride with them a couple weeks ago, had a great time and will definitely try some time on the track.
