Default Cheap exhaust options for 987.1 Boxster base?

I am digging the new to me 2006 Guards Red Boxster I picked up in July, but I am really wishing it was a bit more aggressive in the exhaust department.
Earlier on in my search for a Porsche I was looking at 986s and I understood it was a piece of cake to swap out the exhaust for something different.
Am I correct in that ANY option for this car that will still retain emissions will involve a very expensive (~$1500 USD+) kit due to the secondary cats?
Ideal setup would be a PSE, but I would end up just leaving it opened up all the time anyway.
Are there any proven big bang for the buck mods or hacks out there or am I looking at a Fabspeed or Borla etc...

Careful with aftermarket exhausts. Cayman's are very prone to organ rattling drone...

Here’s a second vote for the Carnewal modified mufflers.
One of the best features of this mod is that there is no drone produced, likely because the stock mufflers with their Porsche designed shape and material weights are retained.

PSE love it. I installed one last year, and now I have a fabspeed header setup with PSE. Sound is great. I would have bought the fabspeed full setup, but I got a deal on the PSE.

Go to 1 min on the video and you will skip the boring part. I'm waiting for the rain to stop for me to do a video with the long tube header sound with PSE.

Loosen the clamp on the pipe between the mufflers and slide it a little so there is a slight airgap between the pipe and muffler. The larger the gap the more sound you let out. Google free 987 exhaust hack or something like that for pics. Did it for a while when I owned a 987 base boxster but wasn't really the sound I was looking for. Put a Borla Cat back on my 987 Cayman S and as others have mentioned, great power, sounds great, but droned terribly. Love my current Fabspeed race headers / PSE / Protune combo, no CELs, the hot ticket for a 981. PSE doesn't add power, but sounds excellent with race headers and zero drone. Folks who mess with the intake side often end up with CELs.

Consider our Performance Exhaust - designed around minimizing drone even with aftermarket headers. We're using high quality sound deadening and a great design to allow the aggressive notes through when you're on the throttle while keeping it civil around town. We're also running a 10% off sale at the moment. We've got plenty of tip options and can customize them to suite your style.
