What's wrong with this car?
 

I'm looking at this 981 cayman base model... (LINK https://www.autosofdallas.com/vehicl...tx-id-21692019 )

Photos show it has a s-like dual tip exhaust, and 19" wheels... then the carfax shows in 2016 it was recorded at 75k on the odometer, and in 2017 recorded at 41k on the odometer. 1 previous lease owner for 3 years.

Called up the place it was punched in at and they said it was probably a fat finger but they'll look into it and call back tomorrow morning.

Should I take this to Porsche and ask for them to do a diagnostic on it and see whats up with it? I'm surprised that its priced at what it is.

Any insight? it's been up for over 215 days on CarGurus ( LINK https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ting=193380924 )

It's marked as a 'Fleet' car.


I drove it today and because I come from a little miata, it felt synthetic and slow to me and I was a bit uncomfortable, but it was my first time driving a cayman. Is this how new cars are supposed to feel? I didn't get a chance to really /DRIVE/ it, so I don't know if there can be some more driving problems... but from the initial drive and my lack of relevant driving experience, I conclude that its good, but I'm just a noob.

Been a long while since I drove a Miata...I had two back in the 90's...but this Cayman appears to have regular vanilla suspension...which I'm not a fan of. I can see jumping from the Mazda to a standard Cayman might feel weird. X73 for me is the way to go. I swapped my 981 standard suspension out for X73 and it was unreal in the difference. So I'm used to 20" wheels + x73...so a heck of a firm ride. Not far away from my current GT4. My 2cents. Hope you can get this car sorted out if you like it. Good luck.

Thank you John. Sport suspension by itself sounds rough let alone riding w/ 20's on low profile wheels. :)

I just hope to compare the current ride w/ another 981 to have another reference point.

Wish you had posted this a few days ago. I was in Dallas and would have been happy to take you for a ride and let you drive my Boxster GTS. I also have a Miata (NB2), so I can speak to both.

I've been thinking about replacing the Miata with a base Cayman. Do me a favor and buy this Cayman before I do.

NB2 Miata as well, I've had it for 8 or 9 years now. I'm getting old and wanting something thats not as rough, but here I am worrying about the smoothness of the ride of a cayman. >_<

Ready to be out of a convertible as well? Just curious since you are switching from the Miata to a Cayman rather than a Boxster.

I'll say this: Ventilated seats in a Boxster changes EVERYTHING.

If you are getting away from a convertible because of the heat, just get ventilated seats. It can be 100 degrees (real temp, not index) and we are perfectly comfortable with the top down. July 4th it was 97 degrees and we went for a four hour drive with the top down. Got home and didn't have a drop of sweat on either of us. Spent five minutes outside talking to a guy working on our house and was so gross I had to change my clothes. The ventilated seats in combination with the air conditioning are that good.

Vented seats are voodoo magic. At first I thought it was a gimmick but it really does make a difference.

@CaymanSinAR - I wrote this long reponse and then accidentally closed the tab. But in summary. I like the Cayman appearance more than the Boxster and I also worked on my Miata's soft top, replacing the canvas and I do not want to deal with that ever again. Noise insulation++

The Cayman is unquestionably better-looking than the Boxster. Always has been. The 718 really closes the gap though.

As for noise insulation, you might be a bit surprised. Do a poll here and I suspect you'll find a lot of people say the Boxster with the top up is the quieter of the two.

I was actually planning to get a Cayman since I already had the Miata. Decided to spend a few days in a 718 S but a Boxster was all that was available. Was trying to convince myself not to get a 987/981. I learned two things:

1. I was going to have ventilated seats no matter what.
2. I was going to get a 981 Boxster GTS for that glorious noise.

Of course now I want a base 981 Cayman too.

Low spec, base car, 3+ years old. Price is not low IMO. I would definitely get a DME report since its a manual and make sure there are no troubling overrevs. I'd also give consideration to the tan interior, as the window reflection is brutal. So bad that there was a class action lawsuit about it.

@Archimedes, thanks for the insight. I'll take it into consideration next time I get into it. Maybe getting the side windows tinted will help with reflection?

I really like the look of that steering wheel in the tan car, but I don't like that it doesnt have ventilated seats (I'm in Texas). However, at least it has A/C. And my miata, its hot... with an old cracked ac compressor. I've been taking pride in slumming around in it for years. :) Just having cold AC is bounds greater than my current situation.

Porsche dealer wants $700 for a 4 hour pre purchase inspection, where a rev report is included... I think it would be cheaper somewhere else?


The lack of maintenance on records since 2016 is a bit scary, but then again... I think it's more worrisome getting into a lower mileage weekend track enthusiasts porsche than a higher mileage 'fleet' porsche.
