Please help settle a bet. Does the engine compartment blow air out or suck air in?

Default Please help settle a bet. Does the engine compartment blow air out or suck air in?

A guy in my car club told me the engine fan sucks air out of the engine compartment (i.e, blows air out of the passenger side vent). On my 2006 Cayman S, the fan definitely sucks outside air into the side vent (tested by putting a piece of paper in front of the vent).

If you can directly prove your statement (paper on vent) to him, what else is needed?

Looks like you need to find a new car club.

The fan pulls heat from the side and into the engine bay. I learned the hard way years ago when I pulled into a dirt parking lot with my top off after a hard run. The fan came on and created a big cloud of dust around the car, I had to pull away to prevent a huge mess.

I can prove my statement easily. He's telling me my fan is hooked up wrong. My fan is definitely drawing air into the engine compartment from the outside.

Which way is the air designed to go when traveling 100 MPH? it goes in at the side vents, both of them. A fan is not going to blow against that incoming air mass.

My friend called me this morning and his Cayman is blowing air out of the side vent. He looked into the engine compartment and his wiring to the fan has been cut and repaired. Looks like the prior owner of his car did something to the fan and put it back incorrectly.

And this is exactly why I don't need a new club. The club (as well as forums) is where we learn about our cars
