Default 2011 Boxster Spyder with Fabspeed mods throwing CELs

Any assistance is greatly appreciated ...

The invoice is from 02/22/2017.

The install was 12/28/2016.

The vehicle is a 2011 Boxster Spyder.

The vehicle has Cat bypass race headers, Plenum, 82mm GT3 style throttle body and a protune.

I am experiencing a CEL, Codes consist of P0421 and P0321.

I have had to Jack Daniels service and the CEL has been on twice. Jack Daniels service indicates that nothing is wrong other than the work I had done to cause the CEL codes. I have contacted Fabspeed and the response back is I must have made some other mods or there is some mechanical issue. I have not made any other mods and the service department at Jack Daniels indicates that nothing is wrong with the car, but they have recommended some services based on time (spark plugs, air filter, drive belt, brake fluid flush, fresh tires)...I have attached a PDF of the log analysis from Jack Daniels ... any suggestions ?

I think your best play is to stop giving the dealership service department your money & spend it on a Durametric. I have almost identical mods as yours (different tune) and I have had 2 CEL's from the lambda code in the 2 years I've owned the spyder. I know that the tune is supposed to fool the ecu but from what I've experienced it doesn't cover every possibility.

IMO the benefits of these mods to the performance / experience gains far outweigh the inconvenience of having to connect the Durametric once a year. I've also saved $$$ by being able to self diagnose other issues such as a faulty ABS sensor that caused multiple warning lights and restricted performance.

Sorry to hear you are having issues. P0421 is related to the exhaust. Where are you located in NJ? Our dealer Apex Autowerks in NJ installs exhaust components, tunes Porsches, and have been outstanding overall at delivering the best possible aftermarket support. I highly suggest giving John there a call. (888) 271-1178.

But couldn't those nuisance codes (and the associated CEL illumination) cause you to miss something dire because you assume any CEL you have staring at you is related to the mods you've done and not something else?

Not sure I follow you... On the 2 occasions I have had a CEL I turned home and immediately diagnosed with the Durametric - which shows any codes that are thrown throughout the ECU's systems. Both times it was the lamda sensor code - nothing dire so I just erase the code and continue to enjoy with no CEL.

Ahh, I thought you were driving with a constant CEL on due to the conditions you were aware of. I didn't realize the symptoms were intermittent.

[QUOTE=Only1Buck;15091217]Any assistance is greatly appreciated ...

Hello,
I am talking with our customer service agent about this as we speak. We have been in communication with our Tuner to see if it’s possible to tweak the tune to solve the issue.

That being said, the exhaust and tune have been on with no issues for two years so this could be more than the exhaust or tune causing this issue, but either way I will be glad to work with you on the problem.
Based on your code these are the causes we would look to identify:
A faulty catalytic converter (Most common cause with this code. Your system doesn’t have cats so this can’t be your cause.)
A faulty oxygen sensor (Most likely your issue as you have been running cat bypass for 2 years. The O2 sensor most likely got overheated and/or damaged somehow.)
Damaged oxygen sensor circuitry. (A little less likely but same as above. The exhaust potentially could have heated the O2 sensor and fried the circuitry.)

Brian, our Customer Service Manager, will be reaching out to you shortly (he is currently in a meeting) to discuss everything in more detail.

I look forward to receiving an update from Brian, because candidly, I was frustrated by the initial response he provided from the tuner. I know there is another NJ registered red Boxster Spyder that has had similar if not the same work done to his car and I would be surprised if he and I are the only NJ clients.

In NJ what other dealer service departments have you had experience with ? The oxygen sensors need to be replaced and Jack Daniels doesn't seem to have interest in doing the work, as I am unable to get a return phone call to schedule an appointment.

I have spoken with Fabspeed and the believe is that the oxygen sensors need to be replaced.

Thanks for sharing, I bought the same set up last year but haven’t installed it yet...decided to wait for the warranty to expire, which just happened this week. Did they give you any indication how often they see this issue? What’s the cost to replace the O2 sensor? Good luck!

Default Similar story - self inflicted wound

I just added ipd plenum/TB and a SOUL full exhaust in past month. I did the work myself and have been fighting a similar code since. I've cleared the code a couple of time, had it tuned and on the Dyno as well. Keeps popping up every 20 miles or so. Thinking O2 sensors so just bought both pairs for around $200 on Rock Auto. We'll see how it goes. Word is it's not uncommon after an exhaust job for these to be damaged and/or fail.

I had the exact same issue with Fabspeed. I bought race headers and a protune because I was told that would solve any cel. It didn't. I was less than impressed with the service. I ended up getting my protune money refunded and will be selling my headers.

The issue has bot yet been resolved. I have been provided a name of an independent shop to have them look at it and most likely replace the oxygen sensors. Jack Daniels service has no interest in looking at the car I have called 3 times and no return call. I will be going to the independent shop. All that aside if I will continue to run into an issue with the CELs being thrown I will have the work undone and go back to stock ... the extra get up and go and sound will be missed ...
