LOL- Pano reasons 911 better than GT4/Spyder
I laughed out loud reading why the 911 is still better than the GT4 (and Spyder) especially since there were four reasons and one was "the GT4 was a very limited production vehicle" and another was "because its not a 911" weak arguments at best. Very Weak Panorama, very weak.

Good, they should keep up with that rhetoric so one day us mere mortals can afford a GT4/Spyder without paying for the inflated price.

I haven’t read the article yet but I’m a bit surprised they would actually publish it without expecting some serious backlash from their subscribers. The only reason the 911 hasn’t been dethroned is because Porsche intentionally handicaps the mid engine cars. The fact that the current generation Porsche 911 RSR’s have their engines sitting in front of the rear axles is confirmation that the mid engine platform is superior. Still the rear engine layout of the 911 is amazingly tuneable to balance the cars handling and once you learn it they are very impressive around corners.

As the owner at one time or another of a Cayman S, two Spyders and a 991.1S, all performance builds, I would honestly say the best car and the quickest car down a given mountain road was the 911. Not the most fun package of the lot, but it was the best all around car in that group IMO. The Spyder is awesome but the perfection of the 911 chassis over these many decades is evident when driven hard.

But it works really, really well. Anyone who doubts that I refer to the video of the track comparison out there where a base 991.1 spanks a 981S on a tight track and looks wayyy more composed doing it. I love my Spyder as a total experience, but my 991S would spank it on any road.

The reason the 991s can do the ring faster than a gt4 is because the 991s they used had pdk. I would rather be a bit slower and row my own gears. If I wanted an automatic, I would take my bmw 550 couchmobile.

Got my copy today and read the article in discussion here. I thought it was a pretty good read. The author started with the 914 and brought up the 928 and the 944 in the discussion. He finally pointed the GT4 as the closest challenger to the 911 to date (the Spyder was never mentioned in the article). The 2 more reasons why the GT4 could not dethrone the 911 other than the 2 that the OP quoted in his original post were: 1) the GT4's lack of PDK; and 2) the GT4's strut-type rear suspension instead of the multi-link setup of the 911. I thought they made sense, at least to me.
The article had a supplement that mentioned about aftermarket upgrades including a multi-link rear suspension that could bring the GT4's performance even closer to that of the GT3. I thought it was fair.
YMMV
