Default 2008 Cayman S - Major Oil Leak

Aloha, and happy Father’s Day. I just purchased my 2008 Cayman S about a month ago with 41k miles. Today, I parked the car on a hill for maybe 10 minutes, and ran some errands. When I got back to the car, it started, idled for about 15 seconds while I looked for my phone, then I started to drive away. About 50 feet later, the car makes one single “clunk” sound, then shuts off. I put the car in neutral, get out, and it’s leaking a LOT of oil. It won’t restart either, since it’s saying “Oil Measure”, with a 5-minute duration. Probably for the best anyway considering how much oil was leaking.

I am hoping it’s not the IMS or anything major, and is instead an RMS, AOS, or some other seal/valve. It has never rattled, emitted smoke, or had any other engine problems. I’m flatbedding it to my mechanic tomorrow.

What do do you guys think? Any help, suggestions, or insight would be great!

Pool of oil likely points to RMS... IMS & AOS won't exhibit that...

A clunky stall followed by oil is not good. Hope it’s not a piston rod through the case

I wouldn't think a seal failure would cause a clunk or stall, but fingers crossed for you. Did you change the oil recently, such that it could have been a loose filter or drain plug? That wouldn't cause the stall, anyway.

Exactly what I was thinking but was reluctant to say. Clunk, stall and massive oil puddle is rarely minor.

Thanks everyone for the help. Got good news yesterday afternoon. The oil leak was due to a camshaft cap blowing off the cam housing. No internal damage, but a new plug and coil was needed due to cylinder 3 misfiring. I told them to go ahead and change all plugs and coils, and change oil and oil filter.

Somewhat pricey, but overall seems like I dodged a major bullet.

Good call, and glad it was nothing serious.

That just leaves me wondering why. Is there excessive crankcase pressure? Cam plugs don't just blow off because they feel like it.
