Default CONSIDERING 2009-11 CAYMAN/BOXSTER WITH PDK--LOOKING FOR ADVICE

I would like to try PDK and also avoid the IMS bearing issue. Realize I will be buying into Direct Fuel Injection which can have its own set of problems.

What is the board's experience with these cars? Looking at some with miles in the 60K-80K range.

Appreciate any advice!

Tom

Overall the 9A1 and PDK seem to be very reliable. Very few problems reported. The base 2.9l motor did not have DFI. That said, the oldest 987.2s are 10 yr old so some things can wear and age out. The normal due diligence on a 10yr old car including PPI is a good idea. From memory the PDK needs clutch oil replaced at 60k and the gearbox fluid at 120k (may want to search that to be sure). Best of luck.

Not completely true. There were PDK failures in the earlier cars that involved dealers doing complete tranny replacements instead of repair due to the complexity of PDK, lack of trained techs and parts. I assumed these are all resolved with software flash.

+1. I can confirm the clutch oil and gearbox intervals, as I just had it done at the dealer (at 26k miles because the car is tracked, but they advised me 60/120).

Don't buy one plz - I need another 987.2 S and the prices are just going up. Terrible decision. Stick to something else...

Check to make sure the car has had all of its routine maintenance, that will be important. Above 50k miles you also need to make sure the water pump isn’t seeping or leaking and expect to replace it if it hasn’t been done already.

Obviously a PPI is always a good idea also.

Good luck.

PSE and Sport Chrono make the car lots more fun. PPI is great advice. After two manual pcars, PDK was the right choice when ordering my third. Be picky, there are folks who love their cars and have taken obsessive care of them. Good luck in your search.

@BostonTom: Good points raised here. Early PDKs (2009s) can have software issues and some mechanical hiccups because of growing pains for Porsche. Look out for hard shifting/clutch engagement in one of these. If shifts aren't crisp or smooth, can indicate that the trans fluid and filter should be changed quickly.

All of this info should come out in a thorough PPI.

I'm also looking for the same car. My goal is to find a clean car under 50,000 miles for $30K give or take a couple K. Can I find an S that fits these criteria? I would be happiest with a Cayman, but there seem to be many more Boxster out there, and a good Boxster would be great. The more performance upgrades the better, i.e. Sport Crono, PASM, PTV and so on. I know that's a lot to ask for.
Long story short....I have a 2013 Cayenne that we bought to be my wife's daily, she still has her 2015 Mercedes S class on lease until September. Once that payment is gone I will buy my 987.2 with cash, no more car payments! I really mean it this time.
I'm a PCA member and I'm looking forward to doing some Auto Cross as well as Driver Education days (track), and weekend fun drives. Why is September so far off?
Any advice would be welcome.

Porsche Sport Exhaust....it will come up as an XLF option code. If you don’t find one with PSE you can go aftermarket, there are several good options and yes the sound does enhance the experience

I see, PSE seems to be rare on the cars I’m seeing. But I will consider the after market option when the time comes.

I am going on 4 years and 20K miles with 2012 Boxster S PDK. (Now for sale )
The only issue I had with my car was the rear view mirror decided not to work. It has been flawless, and the PDK is fantastic. Mine has Sport Chrono, which is a must have for PDK. It can added if you find the perfect car without one. I also added PSE, OMG the sound is amazing.

OP, do it. you won't regret your decision.

If my wife wasn't going to get her Executive MBA, the car would be staying in the family.

Cayman S production numbers:
2009 - 792 (725 USA / 67 Canada)
2010 - 614 (543 USA / 71 Canada)
2011 - 539 (506 USA / 33 Canada)
2012 - 149 (125 USA / 24 Canada)
Low production numbers and a strong demand.....

Best of luck with your search.

Good info, thanks. I'd bet there were 3 or 4 times as many Boxsters sold in that time frame. That makes me think that if I were to make the stretch and pony up for a clean 987.2 Cayman S. Then drive it for 2 or 3k miles a year, in 10 or so years or so I may have a car that's still worth some money. Fun is the real goal, money is only an afterthought.
