Default 2011 Spyder - new Tires!!

Hello all, has anyone had experience with replacing the OEM tires on their 987 SPYDER with Michelin Super Sports or the newer PS4S? I am pulling the trigger on 4 new tires for her and I really only use her for joy rides and canyon carving. It's not a track car. My son and I will be taking a cross country roadtrip in her this year

So, do we recommend the Super Sports or the PS4S for this car an purpose? I understand that the PSS may have a slight advantage in dry handling..... ?

Why not go all out for Bridgestone RE71R?

Err he just says he doesn't do track driving. So I would not recommend the Bridgestones. But that is definitely an excellent tire.

I recommend the Michelin 4S. Sounds like it would be the perfect match for what the OP wants.

Yes, I put PS4's on my Spyder. You will love them. In my opinion the other contender out there is the new Continental. Good write-up of both here: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests...y.jsp?ttid=223

The only reason to go with the Conti is to save some $$. They are almost $400 less/set on Tire Rack. Pretty big savings, but definitely giving something up.

I installed new PS2’s and I find them to be better in every way compared to the Bridgestone RE050A they replaced. I believe the PS4 is the replacement for the PS2 and they have similar weights but new compounds so likely better.

For what its worth anecdotally I really liked the PS4's. In comparison to the super sports, the PS4s seemed very similar but did a little better in the wet this past winter for me. The PSS seemed a little sharper on turn in but again, very similar. Currently have the 71rs mounted for track duty and back roads this summer and VERY impressed with grip levels on the Spyder.

+1 for the PS4S. Replaced the OEM P Zeros with them and couldn't be happier. I found the PS4S to be better in every way than the P Zero.

I just went with PSS vs PS4S . For such a light car as the Spyder i thought they would be slightly better for mostly
road use . Price was very similar here in UK .

I've had PS2's on my RS60 and M3 before this, until the PS4's came out I'd say they were universally better than anything else I had - from P Zero's, to Bridgestones to Continental. I replaced all of those with PS2 based on recommendations in this and the M3 forum.

Is the PS4 better? Tests say so, I can't really tell the difference, when I got mine Tire Rack didn't have PS2's available. Definitely first-world problems choosing between different high-end Michelin's for our Porsches!

is this because the PSS is measurably lighter than the PS4S? This is actually driving me crazy (lol) because I have the PS4S on my 1M but I wanted the most “extreme” for handling in the canyons.

I installed the PS4S on my '11 Spyder and have found them to be an excellent combination of comfort and performance. Can't recommend them enough!

Not sure of the actual weights of the tyres .
The PS4S are a more heavy duty tyre and excellent for track use , but firmer ride on the road .
Also the 4S are the best for winter/ wet use , but mine will be a fair weather queen .

PS4s on Spyder No. 2. They are excellent but I am not sure how much better they are over the PSSs as I find all NEW tires generally good. Would I buy them again? Sure. But if I couldn't get them I wouldn't hesitate to use PSSs or PS2s. As you can see in my Avitar it's hard to tell the difference.

Thank you all. I just had the SuperSports drop shipped to suncoast porsxhe today... big question for the experts...

Shop tech mentioning to me that the rear tires on my PSS are for Mercedes and the fronts are for Ford. I realize this was listed on my TireRack order but just wanted to make sure they’re aren’t any other ratings or variations for the 987 Spyder that I should be concerned about????
