Default How important is PTV?

I'm looking at a 981 Cayman S or GTS.
How important is the PTV option?

Also, in the cars without PTV, what do they have? Mechanical LSD? Open diff? Something else?
I've looked and can't find any info.

Thanks for any enlightenment!

My 2 cents is you have to drive hard to feel any difference. If you have a longer drive in the mountains with a lot of switchbacks you might enjoy the difference. Some people don't like PTV. And am I am not sure but I don't think you can get LSD without PTV on the 981.

il pirata is correct, PTV is the only way to get a limited slip differential on a 981 S or GTS. Otherwise you get an open diff. To me, it was a must-have (as well as X73) but I know it's not that important for others. If you're just going to cruise around town, you won't miss it (or even feel it working even if you do have it). As you can tell from my license plate, I like having it.

Eh, not that important IMO especially for normal use. I track the car a decent bit, and have never felt like the car struggled to put the power down coming out of corners. MR and RR cars need LSD's much less than FR. Low torque cars (relatively) also have less need for LSD. The Cayman, being both MR and fairly low torque, does not really like to spin the rears anyway IME.

I'm an instructor and (former ) SCCA racer, and neither me nor my friends that have driven 981's hard on track really feel like it is a requirement. I'd take one if Guard wanted to send one my way, but it doesn't hold me up or anything. I've spent $5k-$10k on mods (try not to count, right?), and LSD is not one of them. Camber (LCA's), brake studs, Pagids, etc. are all higher priority on track.

For a street car I would not care at all.

+1 I too track the car and drive hard, and don't feel the car lacks that grip. I mainly didn't get it because I didn't want PTV added to my driving aids. I rested on the fact I could add a Guards LSD later if I felt I missed out on something.

I'm also considering a 981 S and was curious about this, will be my semi-daily and backup track car so was curious if PTV was a must have. Appreciate the comments from all.

Currently thinking manual, bose, and sports exhaust with sports seats and PTV being bonuses. Haven't figured out the suspension options yet.

I would recommend the X73 suspension option unless you wanna go aftermarket and go a different route. X73 is sublime.

Agree on X73, it's been the perfect blend of street & track for my skill level. On the street it's just the right amount of stiff without being overbearing. On track, it's perfectly progressive, stable, and balanced.

However, if you want to get more hardcore, you can just visit Tarrett's website and select one of their suspension packages. The trick is you can't just slap on coilovers and leave the rest OEM, a combination of components needs to be added to retain the balance at a higher performance level (and with it, price jumps up quite a bit!).

No PTV means no LSD (open diff). I think PTV/LSD is a must have if you drive in snow or on the track. Otherwise, not a big deal...

I don’t think it’s necessary for the snow - you still have traction control/stability control. With snow tires, I’ve never had an issue in snow, and my car does not have PTV. I believe snow tires make a big difference in terms of cold weather driveability (vs. the max performance summer tires I have on the car the rest of the year).

On the track, PTV/LSD can help with cornering, but I don’t think that it’s really necessary (again, my car works just fine without it)
