it is well known among track rats that m1 0-40 5-40 oil shears down fast in high temps when used on track/sustained high rpms - that's why i run 5 50 my cars that see track time

That's surprising (if true). In the old days, racers avoided multigrade oils, especially those with large spans between the W and (presumably summer) ratings. So one might think that 0W-40 performed better that the larger spanning 0W-50. But even if that's true, "perform" doesn't necessarily include useful life.
On another point, I suppose the trend to thinner oils derives from fuel economy goals. Do today's engines have tighter clearances to better utilize the thinner oils than older ones?

Doesn't look like NAPA is on the Mobil 1 approved rebate dealer list. Too bad. Walmart has 5 Qt containers for 25.99, still a hell of a price.

I saw that yesterday. I still entered my rebate on-line. I've always bought from Napa, and I've always received my rebate check. Several years in a row now. I expect the same from yesterday's purchase. My rebate was accepted on line. I should receive my digital check soon.

So funny story, I just had a shop do my oil (first time shop, last time visit) and they didn't wait for the old oil to drain completely out. And then put in the full suggested amount in for the new oil.
Only thing, it overfilled my engine, after the notice popped up, I turned around - the idea was to empty out a few quarts only, but it was super hot and burned the 'expert's' hand trying to stop the rest of the oil coming out.
Long story short, the Motul they ordered for me would take two weeks - they offered some oil called Liqui-Moly - which they say is just as good. Curious to any 9-nerd who knows otherwise about Motul vs. Liqui-Moly.
I redline daily and I am a daily driver so this isn't just a "I wonder" question - seeking best advise.
Muchas gracias!

TX summers can be over 100 deg. F frequently.
The manual specifies 0W-40, 5W-40, and 5W-50. The 0W-40 is "for all temperature ranges," while the other two are for temps above -13 deg. F. We never have temps that cold, so all three grades are approved. Question is which one is best.

I also use 5W-40 in my 2014 VW Jetta GLI wo sign of oil usage after 45K miles. My Jeep Wrangler calls for very thin oil, but I use 10W-30 with not much oil usage after 110K. I do hear from lots of Jeepers their Wranglers burn lot of oil.... due to the thin oil I believe.

5w-50 for my GT4 and 5w-20 for an Acura TL. Both rebates were accepted online and confirmed via email.
Remember folks, NAPA is listed as National Auto on the Mobil One rebate list.
