The BMW 3 series doesn't even have a coolant temperature gauge. Instead they give you a stupid fuel economy gauge.

Good call, using the sale and rebate for my summer driving season too.

Although most would say that 5-50 has the advantage over 0-40 on the track, the lower weight has the advantage of being able to hold less heat and have slightly less resistance than 5-50.

And why did you select a non Porsche approved oil for a new car under warranty? Well, after your other thread, your warranty might be poof.

5W-50 oil is specified by Porsche.

But Amsoil is not. Porsche only approves of certain types of oil, not just weight (a bit outdated list, but couldn't quickly find a newer version): http://autoworksco.com/wp-content/up...y-2012-A40.pdf. Most people run Mobil 1 and Liquimoly, which are approved.

Amsoil shows up on a newer version from 2015 here, but not in a 50W flavor:

It is interesting that 50W is so rare on this list.

For sure. I think 5W50 first became Porsche approved back in about 2008 (give or take a year or so), and it was really hard to find. Nearly impossible to locate retail. And then it was only Mobil and Castrol. Castrol fell off the list a few years ago. Now only Mobil. I wish Walmart would start stocking it, and I also wish Mobil would start packaging it in the 5 litre jugs.

Mobil 5w50 seems pretty rare to find and somewhat pricey (for M1, not compared to Joe Gibbs and other specialty oils). The NAPA sale you mentioned plus the Mobil coupon is a helluva deal. I got 9 quarts of 5w50 for the 981S and 5 quarts of 5w30 for our A3 for $75 or so total after rebates.

Napa is the only place, over the last several years, that I've been able to consistently find it. In fact, I'm picking up another 6-pack today, because they didn't have enough when I went in last week. FYI, if you'd like to see 4 year's worth of Blackstone UOA data, search my thread on the 991 Forum.

I'm in the San Francisco East Bay where we are up in the 90's for the better part of Summer with a few days over the century mark.
There's no question that I would go with the 5W-40.
